Randomized Controlled TrialImpact of soft splints on upper limb spasticity in chronic patients with disorders of consciousness: A randomized, single-blind, controlled trial.
To assess the effectiveness of soft splints on spasticity and hand opening in chronic patients with upper limb spasticity and disorders of consciousness (vegetative state/unresponsive wakefulness syndrome-VS/UWS and minimally conscious state-MCS). ⋯ Thirty minutes of soft splint application reduces spasticity and improves hand opening of patients with chronic disorders of consciousness. Soft splinting is well tolerated and does not require supervision.

Randomized Controlled TrialSubjective sleep quality and postconcussion symptoms following mild traumatic brain injury.
The goal of this investigation is to examine the prevalence of poor subjective sleep in patients with a history of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) and examine the relationship between subjective sleep quality and postconcussive symptoms (PCS), above and beyond the typical demographic and psychological distress variables. ⋯ Results indicate that poor subjective sleep quality is a significant problem in those with mTBI. While sleep is associated with PCS severity, psychological distress is a more potent predictor.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudySingle versus bilateral external ventricular drainage for intraventricular fibrinolysis using urokinase in severe ventricular haemorrhage.
Intraventricular fibrinolysis (IVF) through bilateral external ventricular drains (EVD) may provide better access of the thrombolytic agent to the intraventricular clot, potentially leading to faster clot clearance. ⋯ The results provide some evidence to support the use of bilateral EVDs for IVF in patients with severe IVH.

Randomized Controlled TrialEffect of COMT Val158Met genotype on attention and response to methylphenidate following traumatic brain injury.
To investigate whether COMT Val158Met allele status was associated with (i) attentional performance and (ii) response to methylphenidate (MP) following traumatic brain injury (TBI). ⋯ COMT allele status was not strongly associated with attentional performance or response to MP in the TBI sample. The met/met group, whilst performing slowly, had relatively preserved strategic control of attention.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyEffect of frequency of multimodal coma stimulation on the consciousness levels of traumatic brain injury comatose patients.
To evaluate the effectiveness of multimodal coma stimulation on the conscious levels of head injury comatose patients and to find out which of the two protocols of coma stimulation, i.e. administrating twice a day or 5-times a day is more beneficial. ⋯ The results showed a significant difference (p < 0.01) for Glasgow Coma Scale as well as Western Neuro Sensory Stimulation Profile scores between Groups A & C and B & C, i.e. multimodal coma stimulation is effective as compared to the control group. The results also revealed a significant difference (p < 0.01) between Groups A, B and C on the Western Neuro Sensory Stimulation Profile but a non-significant difference (p > 0.01) on the Glasgow coma scale. This indicates that short sessions of high frequency can be more beneficial.
