Serum vitamin D deficiency in subjects with severe acquired brain injury and relationship with functional severity.
Vitamin D may be important for the development and function of the nervous system. Low serum vitamin D levels have been detected in several neurological diseases. ⋯ Subjects with sABI showed vitamin D deficiency that might correlate to disability severity. The reason is unclear and might represent a secondary phenomenon resulting from the inflammatory process.

ReviewExamining the relationship and clinical management between traumatic brain injury and pain in military and civilian populations.
In this review, we discuss the comorbidity of traumatic brain injury (TBI) and pain among civilians and military members, the common causes of pain resulting from TBI, and offer insight about the therapeutic management of TBI symptoms and pain. Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a debilitating health problem and one of the most common post-TBI symptoms is pain, which can contribute to psychological issues such as Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression. Headache pain appears to be the most common type of pain that results from TBI, yet pain can also be more widespread. ⋯ A combination of pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapies is often more effective for managing TBI symptoms and pain than either treatment alone. However, future research is needed to determine the most therapeutic approaches for managing the comorbidity of pain and TBI symptoms in the long term. This review offers suggestions for such future studies.

Observational StudyIncidence of paroxysmal sympathetic hyperactivity following traumatic brain injury using assessment tools.
A consensus statement proposed a diagnostic framework to systematise the identification of paroxysmal sympathetic hyperactivity (PSH) using the PSH-Assessment Measure (PSH-AM). ⋯ The recently proposed diagnostic framework may reduce misdiagnosis, length of stay and hospitalisation costs.

Prevalence of depression after TBI in a prospective cohort: The SHEFBIT study.
The objective is to measure the prevalence of depression after traumatic brain injury (TBI) and the features associated with increased risk in a cohort that reflects clinical practice. ⋯ The 3-month prevalence of depression after TBI is very high and associated with several injury and demographic features. Future long-term follow-up of this cohort aims to confirm the features that increase risk; this may allow the earlier targeting of susceptible individuals for depression interventions.

Barriers and strategies for coordinating care among veterans with traumatic brain injury: a mixed methods study of VA polytrauma care team members.
Veterans who experience traumatic brain injury (TBI) may have long-term needs placing a premium on well-coordinated care. This study aimed to (1) identify barriers to care coordination for Veterans with TBI; and (2) describe strategies used by VA polytrauma care team members to coordinate care for Veterans with TBI. ⋯ Polytrauma care team members encounter barriers to care coordination for Veterans with TBI, and have developed strategies in response. Information sharing, provider workload, communication, and patient engagement will be critical to address in future efforts to enhance care coordination in this context.
