Diagnostic performance of procalcitonin, presepsin, and C-reactive protein in patients with hematological malignancies.
Infections represent a major complication of hematological malignancies. C-reactive protein (CRP) and procalcitonin (PCT) have been used as diagnostic biomarkers of infections, but do not produce definitive findings. Recently, a new biomarker, presepsin, has been used as a diagnostic tool for detecting infections in the fields of emergency and neonatal medicine. However, the usefulness of presepsin for identifying infections in patients with hematological malignancies, including those who develop febrile neutropenia, remains unclear. ⋯ We conclude that PCT might provide additional information and could be used in combination with other biomarkers to detect infections in patients with hematological malignancies.

Reference values for kaolin-activated thromboelastography in volunteers of Anhui Province in China.
The assessment of the coagulation status using thromboelastography (TEG) in Chinese population has less been reported. This study aimed to establish reliable reference values for kaolin-activated TEG in Chinese volunteers. ⋯ This study established the reference values for kaolin-activated TEG in the target Chinese population, which might provide a reference for both clinical and laboratory studies.

Serum cystatin c is not superior to serum creatinine for early diagnosis of contrast-induced nephropathy in patients who underwent angiography.
Iodiated contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN) is a serious complication of contrast-enhanced imaging. The aim of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic sensitivities and specificities of serum cystatin C (sCys C) and serum creatinine (sCr) for CIN and to further investigate difference of the incidence, risk factors, and in-hospital and 3-month prognosis of CIN according to sCys C criteria and sCr criteria. ⋯ In this study, the incidence and risk factors of CIN were related to diagnostic criteria. The sCys C was not superior to sCr for predicting CIN in the patients who underwent angiography.

Establishment of reference intervals for serum thyroid-stimulating hormone, free and total thyroxine, and free and total triiodothyronine for the Beckman Coulter DxI-800 analyzers by indirect method using data obtained from Chinese population in Zhejiang Province, China.
In order to establish suitable reference intervals of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), free (unbound) T4 (FT4), free triiodothyronine (FT3), total thyroxine (T4), and total triiodothyronine (T3) for the patients collected in Zhejiang, China, an indirect method was developed using the data from the people presented for routine health check-up. ⋯ Indirect method can be applied for establishment of reference intervals for TSH, FT4, FT3, total T4, and total T3. The reference intervals are narrower than those previously established. Age factor should also be considered.

The Prognostic Significance of Neutrophil-to-Lymphocyte and Platelet-to-Lymphocyte Ratios in Patients With Multiple Myeloma.
Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) are simple, inexpensive prognostic markers for various conditions. The objective of this study was to determine the prognostic significance of NLR and PLR in patients with multiple myeloma (MM) in terms of survival. ⋯ We conclude that NLR is an independent prognostic factor for OS in MM.
