Association of Serum hs-CRP Levels With the Presence of Obesity, Diabetes Mellitus, and Other Cardiovascular Risk Factors.
Diabetes mellitus remains one of the major health problems of the 21st century and is associated with comorbidities including obesity and metabolic abnormalities. The study was conducted to evaluate serum high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) levels, as a marker of inflammation, in a large sample of Iranian population without a history of cardiovascular or inflammatory disease and cancer, and to relate this to fasting blood glucose (FBG) and the presence of diabetes mellitus. ⋯ FBG, LDL-C, WC and gender are independently associated with serum hs-CRP concentrations.

Automated Cerebrospinal Fluid Cell Counts Using the New Body Fluid Mode of Sysmex UF-1000i.
We evaluated the new body fluid module on Sysmex UF1000-i (UF1000i-BF) for analysis of white blood cell (WBC) and red blood cell (RBC) in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). ⋯ The UF1000i-BF provides rapid and accurate WBC and RBC counts in clinically relevant values of CSF cells. The use of UF1000i-BF may hence allow to replace routine optical counting, except for samples displaying abnormal WBC counts or abnormal scattergram distribution, for which differential cell counts may still be required.

Observational StudySerum Levels of Soluble Urokinase Plasminogen Activator Receptor in Infants with Late-onset Sepsis.
Soluble urokinase plasminogen activator receptor (suPAR) has been studied in a variety of diseases. The aim of the study is to investigate the levels of suPAR in neonates with sepsis. ⋯ This is the first study that investigated the levels of suPAR in neonates and our results demonstrate that suPAR is a powerful marker of inflammation in infants with sepsis.

An Evaluation of Laboratory Efficiency in Shanghai Emergency by Turn Around Times Level.
China launched a health care reform policy due to the aging population and rapid urbanization. However, emergency overcrowding is not improved. We assessed the laboratory efficiency of emergency department (ED) in Shanghai hospitals. ⋯ Our TAT level is approaching the recommended international standard. However, the TAT evaluation from ED laboratories demonstrates that their existence does not decrease the waiting time for laboratory reports compared to central laboratory. Thus, they have not yet approached a level to share the burden of the ED overcrowding. Further arrangement should be assigned to separate the function of emergency laboratory and central laboratory. It is worth deploying the POC assay in the ED, which will save twice the TAT level. The idea of evaluating routine laboratory efficiency by TAT at ED is fast, convenient, although it does not represent the general level of laboratory efficiency.

Soluble Lectin-Like Oxidized LDL Receptor 1 as a Possible Mediator of Endothelial Dysfunction in Patients With Metabolic Syndrome.
Metabolic syndrome (MetS) defines a well-known cluster of metabolic disturbances associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes. The aim of this study was to examine the distribution of soluble lectin-like oxidized low-density lipoprotein (LDL) receptor-1 (sLOX-1) levels in patients with MetS, possible association of sLOX-1 with oxidized LDL (oxLDL), endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS), nitric oxide (NOx), endothelin-1 (ET-1), paraoxonase 1 (PON1), and arylesterase (ARE) activities, and these parameters compared with healthy controls. ⋯ sLOX-1 levels are associated with cardiovascular risk factors, such as increased oxLDL, obesity, and diabetes, in patients with MetS. An increased concentration of sLOX-1 could be an early predictor of endothelial damage in MetS. In addition, it appears that oxLDL, ET-1, eNOS, NOx, PON1, and ARE activities may accurately reflect the levels of endothelial dysfunction in MetS patients.
