Investigation on reference intervals and regional differences of platelet indices in healthy Chinese Han adults.
Reference intervals are important for interpretation of clinical laboratory tests. The platelet (PLT) indices such as the mean platelet volume (MPV) and platelet distribution width (PDW) are newer hematological parameters, which have been recently reported as clinically valuable biomarkers. However, there are not many studies that have estimated the reference intervals for these parameters in healthy Chinese Han adults. ⋯ Region-specific reference intervals are essential as there were statistically significant region-related differences in the PLT parameters. The reference intervals established in this study differed from the existing reference values. Chengdu region may need proper specific reference ranges, which apply to their people, for all PLT parameters.

Storage at -80°C preserves the antioxidant capacity of preterm human milk.
It is essential to establish optimum parameters for maintaining the quality of stored milk until the moment of consumption with minimal deterioration of its properties. The aim of the study was to evaluate total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and total oxidation status (TOS) of fresh and freeze-stored samples (at -80°C) of preterm human milk (HM). ⋯ Freeze storage of preterm HM at -80°C for three months preserves the antioxidant capacity without changing oxidative status of HM, which could be noteworthy for the preterm infant nutrition.

Age-specific 99th percentile cutoff of high-sensitivity cardiac troponin T for early prediction of non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) in middle-aged patients.
High-sensitivity cardiac troponin T (hs-cTnT) assay is used in the diagnosis and risk assessment of patients with symptoms of myocardial infarction. This study was undertaken to establish an age-specific 99th percentile cutoff value for hs-cTnT in Chinese population, and to evaluate its potential for early prediction of non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) in middle-aged patients. ⋯ Using 11 ng/L as a decision-making cutoff point for hs-cTnT facilitated earlier prediction of NSTEMI in middle-aged patients than the conventional 14 ng/L cutoff. Further studies are needed to confirm this finding in larger group of patients.

Hepcidin-25 concentrations are markedly increased in patients with chronic kidney disease and are inversely correlated with estimated glomerular filtration rates.
Hepcidin-25 regulates iron homeostasis by binding the iron transporter ferroportin, causing its degradation. Increased hepcidin-25 causes decreased intestinal iron absorption and release from intracellular stores. Our objective in this study was to measure hepcidin-25 levels in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) to determine if they might contribute to the anemia of CKD. ⋯ The direct correlation of hepcidin-25 with creatinine and its inverse correlation with eGFR suggest that hepcidin-25 levels increase as renal function deteriorates, possibly due to decreased hepcidin-25 renal clearance.

Can we predict postoperative pancreatic leakage after pancreaticoduodenectomy using preoperative fecal elastase-1 level?
The measurement of fecal elastas-1 in stools is a sensitive and relatively inexpensive noninvasive test. The aim of this study was to study fecal elastase levels in patients who develop pancreatic leakage after pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD) to determine if fecal elastase level can be used to predict patients at high risk for pancreatic leakage after PD. ⋯ Fecal elastase-1 is the most simple and objective method for predicting pancreatic leakage after PD.
