Comparative Study
Using alternative or direct anthropometric measurements to assess risk for malnutrition in nursing homes.
The aim of this study was to use the Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool (MUST) to assess the applicability of alternative versus direct anthropometric measurements for evaluating the risk for malnutrition in older individuals living in nursing homes (NHs). ⋯ When it is not possible to determine risk category by using SH, we suggest using the alternative measurements (primarily UL, due to its highest sensitivity) to predict the height and to compare these evaluations with those obtained by using middle-upper-arm-circumference to predict the BMI.

A genetic variant of PPARA modulates cardiovascular risk biomarkers after milk consumption.
The association of dairy food consumption with the risk for developing cardiovascular disease (CVD) has been investigated in many studies, but results often have been contradictory. The aim of the present study was to determine whether genetic polymorphisms are associated with interindividual variation in the response of CVD risk biomarker values after milk consumption. ⋯ Saturated fatty acid consumption has long been linked to an increased risk for CVD; indeed, the consumption of saturated fat-free products is recommended as a means of reducing this risk. However, the present results suggest that many individuals might not benefit from such general recommendations. Genetic analysis of PPARA rs135549 might help identify those individuals who are more likely to benefit from reducing the saturated fatty acid content of their diet.

The aim of this report was to elucidate the relation between pancreatitis and obesity in children. ⋯ Our experience suggests that obesity is associated with recurrence as well as severity of acute pancreatitis in children.

To determine the possible utility of pomegranate extract in the management or prevention of Clostridium difficile infections or colonization. ⋯ Pomegranate extract may be a useful contributor to the management and prevention of C. difficile disease or colonization.

Several metabolic pathways may be associated with obesity development and may be differentially modulated by dietary constituents. The aim of this study was to access the adipocyte metabolic pathways that lead to lipid accumulation in fat cells of mice fed a high-carbohydrate or high-fat diet. ⋯ The HC diet induces constitutive expression of lipogenic transcription factors during fasting, whereas the HF diet decreases lipolysis in adipocytes. Both pathways may contribute to increase fat stores and maintain an obese state.
