A combined exercise training and calorie-restriction program is the mainstream treatment of obesity. However, the effect of the dual-action program on mitochondrial function in skeletal muscles has not yet been clarified. The aim of this study was to determine if the combined program, rather than a single program, restored both lost muscle activity and mitochondrial function in obesity. ⋯ These findings reinforce the synergistic beneficial effects of combined exercise and CR on skeletal muscles of HFD-fed rats.

The aim of this study was to assess nutrient patterns and their relation to anemia and iron status of school children using pooled data from three study populations in South Africa. ⋯ The present results highlighted the potential role of the combination of dietary vitamin A and B12 in the etiology of nutritional anemia in school-age children in South Africa. Nutrient pattern analysis may improve the understanding of the synergistic role of nutrients related to anemia and may assist in planning intervention strategies.

Koreans experienced unexpected shortages of food and refugee life during the Korean War (1950-1953). In the present study, we used the Korean War as a natural experiment for early life malnutrition with the aim of evaluating the risk for metabolic syndrome in adulthood according to participant exposure status during the Korean War. ⋯ Fetal and early childhood experiences during the Korean War were associated with increased risk for some components of metabolic syndrome. The present study suggested that early life malnutrition due to the Korean War may be associated with metabolic syndrome in later life.

Our objective was to assess the effectiveness of a structured educational program on improving oncology nurses' knowledge, self-confidence, and self-efficacy in nutritional assessment and counseling for patients with cancer. ⋯ The educational program improved the oncology nurses' knowledge, self-confidence, and self-efficacy in relation to nutritional assessment and counseling. Improving nurses' competencies will improve the quality of care provided to the patients and patient health outcomes.

High fructose consumption exacerbates purine degradation and intestinal dysbiosis, which are closely related to the development of hyperuricemia. Probiotics are powerful weapons to combat metabolic disturbance and intestinal dysbiosis. Previously we isolated a Lactobacillus strain named DM9218 that could reduce the serum uric acid (UA) level by assimilating purine nucleosides. The present study aimed to evaluate the effects of DM9218 on high-fructose-induced hyperuricemia and to elucidate the underlying mechanisms. ⋯ Lactobacillus brevis DM9218 is a probiotic strain with the potential to ameliorate fructose-induced hyperuricemia.
