Gut microbiota composition after diet and probiotics in overweight breast cancer survivors: a randomized open-label pilot intervention trial.
Breast cancer (BC) is the most diagnosed cancer in women. Increasing survival rates shift attention to preventive strategies. Obesity and intestinal microbiota composition may be associated with BC. A Mediterranean diet (MD) proved to be protective. The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy of probiotics in addition to an MD versus diet alone in influencing gut microbiota and metabolic profile in overweight BC survivors. ⋯ Probiotics in addition to an MD positively influence gut microbiota and improve metabolic and anthropometric parameters compared with an MD alone.

The aims of this study were to assess the capacity of tri-ponderal mass index (TMI) to screen and predict insulin resistance (IR) in overweight Brazilian adolescents, comparing it with body mass index (BMI) predictive capacity; and to verify the IR predictive capacity of other assessment tools such as waist circumference (WC), and waist-to-height ratio (WHR). ⋯ TMI did not present a superior predictive accuracy for IR screening in overweight Brazilian adolescents when compared with BMI. TMI and BMI presented similar values of sensitivity and specificity for boys and WC a slightly superior IR predictive capacity for girls.

Diabetes mellitus is a major global public health issue. Cross-sectional studies have demonstrated that skeletal muscle quality and quantity by computed tomography (CT) is related to glucose metabolism. However, to our knowledge, no longitudinal study has yet to elucidate the association between muscle quality determined by CT and glucose metabolism. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the association between muscle quality and glucose metabolism. ⋯ Both LAM index and total SMD were associated with a higher risk for incident diabetes mellitus, whereas NAM index and total SMI were not.

The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of nighttime energy intake on daily energy and macronutrient distribution and weight gain during pregnancy. ⋯ Pregnant women with a higher energy intake at night had a lower percentage of energy, protein, and lipid intake in morning meals and a higher percentage of energy and macronutrient intake in the evening meals during pregnancy. A worse standard of gestational weight gain in the third trimester was also observed in pregnant women with a higher energy intake at night.

The aim of this study was to evaluate hypertension risk associated with long- and short-term body mass index (BMI) changes. ⋯ For participants with normal BMI, risk tended to be higher in adults whose elevated BMI occurred during the long-term. For those who are overweight, long-term decreased BMI can reduce the risk for incident hypertension to a greater extent. No correlation was found between absolute changes in BMI and systolic blood pressure.
