The new coronavirus associated with severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS-CoV-2), surprisingly, does not affect only the lungs. The severe response to SARS-CoV-2 appears to include a "cytokine storm," which indicates a state of hyperinflammation and subsequent dysfunction of multiple organs and tissues in the most severe cases. This could be the reason why populations at the highest risk for death from the SARS-CoV-2 infection-induced disease (coronavirus disease 2019 [COVID-19]) are those suffering from chronic low-grade inflammation, but prone to hyperinflammation. ⋯ Additionally, they are associated with a less aggressive inflammatory initiation, after competing with ω-6 fatty acids for eicosanoid synthesis. Therefore, it makes sense to consider the use of ω-3 PUFAs for clinical management of COVID-19 patients. ω-3 PUFAs may be given by oral, enteral, or parenteral routes; however, the parenteral route favors faster incorporation into plasma phospholipids, blood cells, and tissues. Here, we discuss these aspects to propose the parenteral infusion of ω-3 PUFAs as adjuvant immunopharmacotherapy for hospitalized patients with COVID-19.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the potential of pterostilbene, a beneficial component primarily found in blueberries, to alleviate the intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR)-induced early liver injury and oxidative stress in a porcine model. ⋯ This study indicates that pterostilbene treatment has an auxiliary therapeutic potential to ameliorate early liver injury in IUGR neonates, presumably by stimulating the NRF2 signals and the associated antioxidant function.

Accidental exposure to high-dose radiation causes life-threatening acute radiation syndrome, features that include gastrointestinal syndrome (GIS) and hematopoietic syndrome (HS). Administration of vitamin C (VC), a free radical scavenger, has been reported to increase survival of mice in GIS and HS models. The effect of nutritional VC status on radiation injury remains unknown because, unlike humans, mice can synthesize VC. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of VC insufficiency on acute radiation syndrome using senescence marker protein 30 (SMP30)/gluconolactonase knockout (SMP30-KO) mice. ⋯ The results of this study demonstrated that nutritionally sufficient VC exerts a radioprotective effect against radiation-induced GIS.

The aim of this study was to investigate putative different outcomes on the development of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in mice using fat options regularly used in human nutrition. ⋯ Different fat dietary sources imprint different immune and metabolic effects in the liver during consumption of an HFD. The present data highlighted that Primex-Z-a novel non-trans-fat-is not only able to damage hepatocytes, but also to impair liver ability to clear blood-borne infections.
