Vitamin D status in relation to Crohn's disease: Meta-analysis of observational studies.
Inconsistent findings have been published regarding vitamin D status among patients with Crohn's disease (CD) and the association with disease severity. We aimed to perform a meta-analysis evaluating serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D and 1,25 dehydroxyvitamin D among CD patients compared with healthy and non-healthy controls, the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency, and the association with disease. ⋯ We found that patients with Crohn's disease had lower serum 25(OH)D concentrations compared with their healthy counterparts, and more than half of them have hypovitaminosis D. Moreover, there was an inverse correlation between circulating 25(OH)D concentrations and severity of Crohn's disease.

Fruit and vegetable consumption and the risk of depression: A meta-analysis.
Epidemiologic investigations evaluating the association of fruit and vegetable consumption with depression risk have yielded controversial results. Therefore, a meta-analysis was carried out to qualitatively summarize the evidence regarding association of fruit and vegetable intake with risk of depression in the general population. ⋯ This meta-analysis indicated that fruit and vegetable consumption might be inversely associated with the risk of depression, respectively.

Effects of different dietary approaches on inflammatory markers in patients with metabolic syndrome: A systematic review and meta-analysis.
Chronic low-grade inflammation has been associated with insulin resistance, diabetes, atherosclerosis, obesity, and metabolic syndrome (MetS). A proinflammatory environment contributes to several metabolic disturbances and possibly the development of MetS. Dietary approaches have defined impact on immune function and putative antiinflammatory effects. The aim of this study was to assess the effects of different dietary approaches on markers of inflammation in patients with MetS. Further effects on weight loss and fasting insulin were analyzed. ⋯ C-reactive protein; however, this effect is also dependent on weight loss. Furthermore, low-carbohydrate diets have beneficial effects on insulin and body weight. Dietary approaches should mainly be tried to reduce macronutrients and enrich functional food components such as vitamins, flavonoids, and unsaturated fatty acids. People with MetS will benefit most by combining weight loss and anti-inflammatory nutrients.

Association of conjugated linoleic acid consumption and liver enzymes in human studies: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled clinical trials.
The aim of this study was to systematically review the association of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) consumption in two forms of foods enriched or supplemented with CLA on serum liver enzymes in human studies. ⋯ CLA supplementation was associated with a significantly increased circulating AST without any significant effect on ALP and ALT levels. Prospective studies are necessary to assess the clinical outcomes of the association between CLA and liver enzyme concentrations.

Green tea and liver cancer risk: A meta-analysis of prospective cohort studies in Asian populations.
The aim of this meta-analysis was to investigate whether an association existed between green tea consumption and the risk for liver cancer in prospective cohort studies in Asian populations. ⋯ The present analysis indicated the preventive effects of green tea intake on the risk for liver cancer in female Asian populations. However, additional studies are needed to make a convincing case for this association.
