A new resting metabolic rate equation for women with class III obesity.
Resting metabolic rate (RMR) is an important parameter to guide the nutritional therapy of class III obese patients. The aims of the present study were to develop a predictive equation for RMR estimation in class III obese women using anthropometric indicators and to compare indirect calorimetry with other predictive equations. ⋯ The prediction equations tested in the study had low accuracy in estimating RMR of women with class III obesity. However, our equation was developed specifically for this population, using variables known to influence their energy expenditure.

Gestational low-protein (LP) programming causes glucose intolerance (GI) and insulin resistance (IR) in adult offspring. Folate supplementation has been shown to rescue the offspring from various programming effects. The aim of this study was to investigate whether folate supplementation during pregnancy reverses LP-induced GI and IR. ⋯ Folate treatment partially reverses LP-induced GI and the magnitude of reversal is age and sex dependent. Furthermore, folate treatment does not reverse IR in either sex but makes it worse in males at 4 mo. The present study demonstrated that folate treatment is not sufficient to rescue the LP programming effects.

High-dose vitamin D in Addison's disease regulates T-cells and monocytes: A pilot trial.
On the basis of the immunomodulatory actions of vitamin D (VD), we investigated the effects of high-dose VD therapy over a 3 mo period on the immune response in patients with Addison's disease (AD). ⋯ Three months of treatment with cholecalciferol achieved sufficient 25(OH)D3 levels and can regulate late-activated T-cells and monocytes in patients with AD. Explorative analysis revealed potential genetic contributions. This pilot trial provides novel insights about immunomodulation in AD.

This study aimed to provide an overview of the characteristics of thickened formulas to aid health care providers manage infants with regurgitations. ⋯ Thickened formulas reduce the frequency and severity of regurgitation and are indicated in formula-fed infants with persisting symptoms despite reassurance and appropriate feeding volume intake.
