Nutritional support practices in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation centers: A nationwide comparison.
In 2009, international nutritional societies published practice guidelines on screening and nutritional support for patients undergoing stem cell transplantation. Little is known about how these guidelines are implemented in clinical practice. We performed a nationwide survey with the aim of understanding current practice patterns, differences between clinical practice, and international recommendations as well as barriers to the use of nutritional therapy. ⋯ This Swiss survey found wide variation in the use of nutritional therapy in patients undergoing stem cell transplantation, with low adherence overall to current practice guidelines. Understanding and reducing barriers to guideline implementation in clinical practice may improve clinical outcomes. Close collaboration of centers will facilitate future research needed to improve current practice and ensure high quality of treatment.

In patients with cancer, weight loss can be related to simple starvation, disturbed metabolism, or both. In patients with head and neck cancer (HNC), weight loss often is attributed to simple starvation because the obvious oral symptoms are known to hinder dietary intake. In this population, cachexia remains a relatively unexplored phenomenon. The aim of this study was to explore the prevalence of cachexia and precachexia in patients with newly diagnosed HNC. ⋯ This exploratory study suggested a high prevalence of cachexia (42%) in patients with newly diagnosed HNC. Although a large study is needed to further elucidate the role of cachexia in patients with HNC, the data presented here suggest that cachexia is a common problem in this patient population, which has therapeutic and prognostic implications.

Periodic fasting, under a religious aspect, has been adopted by humans for centuries as a crucial pathway of spiritual purification. Caloric restriction, with or without exclusion of certain types of food, is often a key component. Fasting varies significantly among different populations according to cultural habits and local climate conditions. ⋯ The long-term significance of such changes on global health remains to be explored. This review summarizes the data available with regard to benefits of fasting followed for religious reasons on human health, body anthropometry, and cardio-metabolic risk markers; aims to bridge the current knowledge gap on available evidence and suggests considerations for the future research agenda. Future studies should explore every type of religious fasting, as well as their consequences in subpopulations such as children, pregnant women, and the elderly, or patients with chronic metabolic diseases.

The aim of this study was to establish a prediction system for taste sense according to the biochemical data of saliva. ⋯ Saliva pH most strongly affects the sweetness sensitivity. This prediction can be used for evaluations of variations in dietary choices and to help individuals make healthy food choices to maintain health.

The aim of this study was to investigate the interaction of toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) gene single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) and plasma fatty acid (FA) profile in modulating risk for systemic inflammation. ⋯ Plasma fatty acid profile modulated the odds of belonging to the INF cluster depending on genotypes of TRL4 gene polymorphisms.
