In elderly cancer patients tube feeding, via a nasogastric tube or a (percutaneous) gastrostomy may be an efficient way of nutritionally supporting patients with extreme anorexia or dysphagia caused by a head&neck tumor or with an oro-pharyngeal-esophageal mucositis due to radiation therapy and/or chemotherapy. There is no definite difference, with regard to the clinical benefit, between nasogastric and gastrostomy feeding. Both procedures achieve good results in allowing the proper completion of the oncologic therapy. Whether to use a nasogastric tube or a (percutaneous) gastrostomy and whether to perform the procedure prophylactically or a la demande is a matter of controversy and depends more on the policy of the single institution and preferences of the patients than on evidence-based results.

Effect of an advanced glycation end product-restricted diet and exercise on metabolic parameters in adult overweight men.
The aim of this study was to review the effect of a low advanced glycation end product (AGEs) diet, exercise, and a combination of both on circulating AGE levels as well as on plasma lipids and anthropometric parameters. ⋯ An AGE-restricted diet reduces serum AGE and indices of body fat. The addition of exercise to the restricted diet has the same effects but also improves lipid profile.

The aim of this study was to estimate the weighted mean effect of vitamin D supplementation in reducing depressive symptoms among individuals aged ≥18 y diagnosed with depression or depressive symptoms. ⋯ Future RCTs examining the effect of vitamin D supplementation among individuals who are both depressed and vitamin D deficient are needed.

Effects of a single dose of a flavonoid-rich blueberry drink on memory in 8 to 10 y old children.
Recent evidence from animals and adult humans has demonstrated potential benefits to cognition from flavonoid supplementation. The aim of this study was to investigate whether these cognitive benefits extended to a sample of school-aged children. ⋯ Although findings are mixed, the improvements in delayed recall found in this pilot study suggest that, following acute flavonoid-rich blueberry interventions, school-aged children encode memory items more effectively.
