According to the "antioxidants network" theory, the present study was conducted to evaluate the regulation of an antioxidant blend on intestinal redox status and major microbiota of early-weaned piglets. ⋯ Supplementation of the antioxidant blend effectively restored intestinal redox status and microbiota balance in the porcine intestine in response to early weaning stress, enhancing intestinal health and function of piglets.

Comparison of bioavailability (I) between soyasaponins and soyasapogenols, and (II) between group A and B soyasaponins.
The bioavailability and absorption of soyasaponins and soyasapogenols remain unclear; therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate plasma soyasaponin and soyasapogenol concentrations and absorption characteristics. ⋯ These results suggest that bioavailability of soyasapogenols is better than that of corresponding soyasaponins and that of group B soyasaponins is better than that of group A soyasaponins.

Crude ethanolic extract of Peucedanum japonicum Thunb (PJT) has been identified as an antiobesity and antidiabetic candidate. The aim of this study was to assess the mechanisms related to the antiobesity activity of partially purified PJT ethanol extract in vitro. ⋯ Our study demonstrated that the HP plays a crucial role in regulating lipid metabolism-related gene expressions and energy expenditure in vitro. The results thus provide insight on the activity of HP involved in suppressing obesity and its chemical entities.

Muscle release of the amino acid 3-methyl-histidine (3MH) is a sensitive index of myofibrillar protein overdegradation (MPO). We hypothesized that patients with chronic heart failure (CHF) could have increased muscle release of 3MH, which in turn reflects MPO, and that serum electrolyte sodium (Na(+)) and potassium (K(+)) levels may be associated with this 3MH muscle release. ⋯ The study demonstrated the existence of MPO in resting overweight patients with CHF, thereby suggesting that low serum levels of K(+) may contribute to MPO.
