Lipid emulsions provided with total parenteral nutrition (TPN) have been associated with mononuclear phagocytic system functional changes. The aim of the present investigation was to assess the influence of TPN with added lipid emulsions on macrophage (M phi) phagocytosis. Wistar rats (n = 70) with external jugular vein cannulation were randomized into seven groups. ⋯ Non-lipid TPN inhibited spleen and lung M phi phagocytosis when compared with the OS and lipid-TPN groups. Lipid TPN supplemented with fish oil emulsion increased total liver and lung M phi number and phagocytosis. These results indicate that TPN supplemented with fish oil increases M phi phagocytosis in rats.

Suppression of hepatic fatty acid oxidation and food intake in men.
We investigated the effects of the fatty acid oxidation inhibitor etomoxir (ETO) on food intake and on fat and carbohydrate metabolism in two double-blind crossover studies in male, normal-weight subjects. In study 1, ETO (75 mg [+]-racemate) or placebo was given orally 30 min after completion of a standardized, fat-enriched (total energy: 2698 kJ, 40% from fat) lunch. The subjects (n = 15) were isolated from external time cues and free to choose when to eat dinner from an oversized serving (total energy: 6656 kJ, 60% from fat). ⋯ Baseline plasma concentrations of BHB, FFA, and lactate were higher in study 2 than in study 1 (BHB: 242 versus 81 mumol/L, P < 0.001; FFA: 0.674 versus 0.406 mmol/L, P < 0.01; lactate: 1.08 versus 0.74 mmol/L, P < 0.05). Plasma concentrations of TG, glucose, and insulin were not affected by ETO. The results suggest that inhibition of hepatic fatty acid oxidation stimulates eating in men when baseline fatty acid oxidation is sufficiently high and markedly suppressed by the treatment.

Cognition-enhancing properties of subchronic phosphatidylserine (PS) treatment in middle-aged rats: comparison of bovine cortex PS with egg PS and soybean PS.
There are various clinical and non-clinical studies that have indicated that phosphatidylserine (PS) treatment can improve cognitive functions in humans and other animals. However, treatment with PS derived from bovine cortex is not desirable because of possible transfer of infectious diseases. The present study investigated the cognition-enhancing properties of different types of PS in rats. ⋯ It appeared that the cognition-enhancing effects of S-PS were not different from those of BC-PS. The performance of rats treated with E-PS did not deviate from that of vehicle-treated rats. On the basis of the present study, it was concluded that S-PS, but not E-PS, may have comparable effects on cognition when compared with BC-PS.

This study compares the effects of the Ramadan fast (RF) on body and plasma compositions, hematology, and responses to steady state submaximal exercise in six physically active (A, 35.5+/-1.6 y) and seven sedentary (S, 37.6+/-2.3 y) Kuwaiti men. Subjects were evaluated: 1) 1 wk before RF (pre-RF); 2) 2 wk after the start of RF (mid-RF); 3) at the 4th wk of RF (end-RF). Total body weight and body fat decreased insignificantly (<1.5%, P>0.3) in both groups. ⋯ Deficits or redistribution of specific micronutrients (iron, vitamins) may account for reductions in serum iron and platelet counts, particularly in sedentary subjects that need to limit intake to maintain body weight. The decrease in submaximal exercise heart rate indicates that during RF, cardiovascular adaptation to conditioning is adequate in the more physically active group. Body fluid balance was better maintained in active than in sedentary subjects.

Attenuation of the protein wasting associated with bed rest by branched-chain amino acids.
Bed rest is generally accepted as being an appropriate ground-based model for human spaceflight. The objectives of this study were to test the hypothesis that increasing the amount of branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) in the diet could attenuate the protein loss associated with bed rest. Nineteen healthy subjects were randomized into two groups according to diet. ⋯ In our results, the urine-based estimate of N balance was 22.2 +/- 14.4 (n = 9) mg N.kg-1.d-1 and 60.5 +/- 10.1 mg (n = 8) N.kg-1.d-1 for the control and BCAA-supplemented groups, respectively (P < 0.05). Urinary 3-MeH excretion was unchanged in both groups with bed rest. We conclude that BCAA supplementation attenuates the N loss during short-term bed rest.
