Preadministration of flurbiprofen suppresses prostaglandin production and postoperative pain in orthopedic patients undergoing tourniquet inflation.
To evaluate the effect of preadministration of flurbiprofen on the plasma concentrations of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and postoperative pain. ⋯ Preadministration of flurbiprofen suppresses the local production of PGE2 during tourniquet ischemia, resulting in reduced early postoperative pain in patients undergoing knee surgery.

Nitrous or nitric? Same difference. Molecular formulas in the 1840s.
The molecular formulas given by James Y. Simpson for nitrous oxide, diethyl ether, and chloroform are difficult to interpret today. ⋯ The nitrous oxide formula was incorrect owing to confusion with Dalton's nitrous gas, now termed nitric oxide. The Simpson formulas illustrate that inhaled anesthesia arrived at the time of a cusp in the history of chemistry.

The addition of a regional block team to the orthopedic operating rooms does not improve anesthesia-controlled times and turnover time in the setting of long turnover times.
To determine whether a regional block team with a dedicated space for performance of regional anesthetics would decrease turnover time and shorten the working day in a busy orthopedic practice with lengthy turnover times. ⋯ A regional block team in this environment does not reduce anesthesia-controlled times and turnover times in an orthopedic OR suite with long turnover times, and it would be virtually impossible to recover the associated extra cost. The surgeons' perspective of turnover time is inaccurate.

The importance of blood sampling site for determination of hemoglobin and biochemistry values in major abdominal and orthopedic surgery.
To determine whether sampling of blood from different sites influences laboratory results. ⋯ Under stable hemodynamics and in the absence of hypothermia, serum lactate level was higher in peripheral venous blood than it was in the central vein or radial artery.

Pain prevention with intraoperative ketamine in outpatient children undergoing tonsillectomy or tonsillectomy and adenotomy.
To evaluate the effectiveness of ketamine in the prevention of postoperative pain after tonsillectomy. ⋯ Ketamine decreases postoperative analgesic requirements and has analgesic effects when used before surgery in tonsillectomy/adenotonsillectomy.
