Successful unilateral partial lung lavage in a child with pulmonary alveolar proteinosis.
Pulmonary alveolar proteinosis (PAP) is a rare disorder in which lipoproteinaceous material accumulates within the alveoli. A 4-year-old child with autoimmune PAP, who was successfully treated with a series of unilateral partial bronchoalveolar lavages by selectively ventilating the other lung with a cuffed endotracheal tube, is presented.

To characterize the approach of academic chairs of anesthesiology in leading and managing their departments, and to gain insights into what they considered the most difficult challenges as chairs. ⋯ Chairs considered the most important leadership challenge to be setting direction for the department, and the most difficult management challenges as "fostering research and scholarship" and "maintaining revenue to support faculty".

Severe remifentanil-induced acute opioid tolerance following awake craniotomy in an adolescent.
Anesthetic goals for procedures involving resections close to the motor cortex include immobility, analgesia, and a level of consciousness that allows for the ability to follow motor commands. Remifentanil as a single agent is an attractive choice, particularly when ventilation is controlled. The successful use of large-dose remifentanil infusion during an awake craniotomy in a 16 year-old man and the subsequent severe acute opioid tolerance is presented.

John Silas Lundy created the Anaesthetists' Travel Club in 1929 in an effort to disseminate the most current information in the medical specialty of anesthesiology, but also to insure that this information was incorporated quickly to improve anesthesia care. Lundy's work stands as an example of commitment to professional competence.

To determine whether interscalene brachial plexus block (ISB) provides adequate anesthesia for surgery on or about the elbow. ⋯ The low interscalene block can be used to provide surgical anesthesia in the majority of patients having surgery on or about the elbow.
