Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study
Absence of analgesic effect of intravenous melatonin administration during daytime after laparoscopic cholecystectomy: a randomized trial.
To investigate whether melatonin administered intraoperatively reduced pain following laparoscopic cholecystectomy. ⋯ The use of 10mg of IV melatonin administered during laparoscopic cholecystectomy did not affect postoperative pain or use of analgesic medication.

Coronary artery disease and its risk factors in patients presenting for liver transplantation.
To determine the distribution of coronary artery disease (CAD) and its risk factors across the various etiologies of end-stage liver disease, and to elucidate the relationship between severe alcohol consumption and CAD. ⋯ Prevalence of CAD and the distribution of CAD risk factors in patients with severe alcohol consumption were similar to patients with viral hepatitis. CAD was most prevalent in patients with hepatic steatosis. This study argues against the notion of decreased expression and progression of CAD in patients with alcoholic cirrhosis presenting for liver transplantation.

Incidence and predictors of postdischarge nausea and vomiting in a 7-day population.
1) To quantify the incidence and severity of postdischarge nausea and vomiting (PDNV) for 7 days in adults undergoing outpatient surgeries with general anesthesia; 2) to evaluate whether a risk model previously developed for the first two postoperative days may be used to predict the patient's risk of PDNV for 7 days; and 3) to verify whether the same risk factors are applicable in the 3 to 7 day period. ⋯ PDNV affects a significant number of patients after ambulatory surgery, and our simplified PDNV score may be applied to a 7-day population. Pain appears to be a factor in late PDNV. It is possible that the presence of PDNV during days 3-7 has different origins from the PDNV that resolved over the first 48 hours.

Emotional intelligence and the relationship to resident performance: a multi-institutional study.
To test the hypothesis that emotional intelligence, as measured by a BarOn Emotional Quotient Inventory (EQ-i), the 125-item version personal inventory (EQ-i:125), correlates with resident performance. ⋯ Emotional intelligence, as measured by the BarOn EQ-i personal inventory, has considerable promise as an independent indicator of performance as an anesthesiology resident.

What do patients know about anesthesiologists? Results of a comparative survey in an U.S., Australian, and German university hospital.
To determine patients' knowledge of the role of the anesthesiologist in the hospital. ⋯ Patients underestimated the training and role of the anesthesiologist in the OR and hospital.
