Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study Clinical Trial
Etomidate and thiopental-based anesthetic induction: comparisons between different titrated levels of electrophysiologic cortical depression and response to laryngoscopy.
To determine whether etomidate-based induction can provide better hemodynamics than a standard thiopental sodium-based anesthetic induction. ⋯ Etomidate-based anesthetic induction, titrated to EEG burst suppression, produced stable hemodynamics during laryngoscopy and intubation as compared with lower dose, more "classic" inductions with etomidate or thiopental.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study Clinical Trial
Ondansetron prevents postoperative emesis in male outpatients. S3A-379 Study Group.
To determine (1) the efficacy and safety of ondansetron in the prevention of postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) in male outpatients; (2) prognostic factors for PONV in male outpatients; and (3) patients' perceptions of the debilitating effects of PONV in the ambulatory surgery setting. ⋯ Ondansetron 4 mg was more effective than placebo in preventing PONV in male outpatients. Males at potential risk for developing PONV include: (1) those with a history of motion sickness and/or PONV; (2) patients undergoing nonorthopedic procedures; and (3) procedures lasting longer than one hour. Such patients may benefit from receipt of a prophylactic antiemetic. Postoperative nausea and vomiting has a debilitating effect that can be differentiated by patients from the effects of surgery itself.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study Comparative Study Clinical Trial
A phase III, multicenter, open-label, randomized, comparative study evaluating the effect of sevoflurane versus isoflurane on the maintenance of anesthesia in adult ASA class I, II, and III inpatients.
To compare the clinical efficacy and safety of sevoflurane and isoflurane when used for the maintenance of anesthesia in adult ASA I, II, and III inpatients undergoing surgical procedures of at least 1 hour's duration. ⋯ Sevoflurane anesthesia, as compared with isoflurane, may be advantageous in providing a smoother clinical course with a more rapid recover.

Use of esophageal or precordial stethoscopes by anesthesia providers: are we listening to our patients?
To ascertain current anesthesia utilization of esophageal and precordial stethoscopes in U.S. anesthesia training programs. ⋯ Our data suggest infrequent utilization of esophageal and precordial stethoscopes in anesthesia training institutions. Thus, current anesthesia training may be fostering an environment where providers overlook a valuable minimally invasive, and cost-effective continuous monitor of patients' dynamic vital organ function.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study Clinical Trial
A double-blind, placebo-controlled pilot study examining the effectiveness of intravenous ondansetron in the prevention of postoperative nausea and emesis.
To compare the efficacy and safety profiles of ondansetron and a placebo when infused immediately prior to anesthesia induction for the prevention of postoperative nausea and emesis (vomiting or retching). ⋯ Ondansetron, infused IV before anesthesia induction, appears to be safe and effective when used in the prevention of postoperative nausea and emesis.
