Randomized Controlled Trial
Low Tidal Volume Positive End-Expiratory Pressure versus High Tidal Volume Zero-Positive End-Expiratory Pressure and Postoperative Pulmonary Functions in Robot-Assisted Laparoscopic Radical Prostatectomy.
The aim was to compare the effects of low tidal volume (VT) and moderate positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) with high VT and zero end-expiratory pressure (ZEEP) on postoperative pulmonary functions and oxygenation in patients undergoing robot-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy. ⋯ Postoperative pulmonary functions were less impaired in patients ventilated with a VT of 6 mL/kg and 8 cm H2O PEEP than in patients ventilated with a VT of 10 mL/kg and ZEEP.

To establish the efficacy of an algorithm based on the biomarker procalcitonin (PCT) to reduce antibiotic exposure in pediatric patients with lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI). ⋯ This study showed that PCT guidance of antibiotic treatment in children and adolescents with LRTI reduced the duration of antibiotic exposure and antibiotic prescribing rates, but did not affect the adverse effect rate and length of hospital stay.

To determine the effect of glucose, sucrose, and saccharin on growth, adhesion, and biofilm formation of Candida albicans and Candida tropicalis. ⋯ In this study, glucose and sucrose accelerated the growth, adhesion, and biofilm formation of Candida species. However, the non-nutritive sweetener saccharin appeared to dampen, and in some instances suppress, these virulent attributes of Candida.

This study examined statin adherence amongst Kuwaiti hypercholesterolemic patients in order to identify factors associated with poor adherence and to determine whether or not an association exists between statin adherence and the risk profile of coronary heart disease (CHD). ⋯ In this study, there was a high prevalence of low statin adherence, especially among younger patients with fewer concomitant diseases. The results indicated an inverse relationship between statin adherence and CHD risk profile.

The aim of this study was to determine antibiotic resistance trends and carriage of staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec (SCCmec) genetic elements in methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) isolated in Kuwait hospitals to ascertain whether they were healthcare associated (HA-MRSA) or community associated (CA-MRSA). ⋯ This study demonstrates changes in antibiotic resistance patterns of MRSA over time and reinforces the value of surveillance in detecting such changes for the benefit of infection control and patient management.
