The Program for Prevention and Health Promotion (PPHP) of the Spanish Society of Family and Community Medicine was launched at the end of the 1980s and its main objective is to integrate preventive and health promotion activities in daily clinical practice in primary care. The aim of the present study was to determine the level of compliance with the preventive activities of the PPHP. ⋯ The PHPPS continues to operate 24 years after its initiation. However, some adaptations are needed since the Spanish health system is changing. Proposed modifications are related to accessibility and to providing a more effective response to users. In elderly patients, life expectancy should be assessed and priorities for preventive interventions should be set accordingly.

The present article describes the general organization of pre-hospital emergency care in the autonomous regions and provides data on activity corresponding to 2010, drawn from the information available in the Primary Care Information System of the Ministry of Health, Social Policy and Equality. Emergency care is provided through various organizational structures covering 24-hour periods. Family medicine attended 17.8 million emergency consultations and nursing attended 10.2 million (year 2010, 14 autonomous communities, 79.7% of the National Health System population). ⋯ Undoubtedly, the main challenge is to achieve optimal coordination with other welfare levels, including the police, social services, nursing homes, etc. If optimal care of the population needs to count on the efforts of all these groups, mobility, individual differences, consistent achievement of high standards, and -most of all- the use of these services by citizens will determine the final result. The results can be quantified in various ways, but evaluation should concentrate on the resources used, the degree of satisfaction among all the parties involved and optimal management of demand, which will help to disseminate the need for a rational resource use.

Multicenter Study Clinical Trial
[Assessment of the psychometric properties of the Detection of Emotional Distress Scale in cancer patients].
To evaluate and alleviate the emotional distress suffered by advanced cancer patients, simple screening methods that can be easily used by health staff and easily understood by patients are required. The objective of this multicenter study was to analyze the psychometric properties and clinical utility of the Detection of Emotional Distress (DED) scale in advanced cancer patients attending a palliative care unit. ⋯ The DED scale is useful and easy to use in the identification of emotional distress in advanced cancer patients attended in palliative care units. This scale could also be applied in other patients and health care fields, such as patients with chronic diseases, home care, and primary care.
