ReviewBayesian statistics in anesthesia practice: a tutorial for anesthesiologists.
This narrative review intends to provide the anesthesiologist with the basic knowledge of the Bayesian concepts and should be considered as a tutorial for anesthesiologists in the concept of Bayesian statistics. The Bayesian approach represents the mathematical formulation of the idea that we can update our initial belief about data with the evidence obtained from any kind of acquired data. It provides a theoretical framework and a statistical method to use pre-existing information within the context of new evidence. ⋯ It starts with a general introduction to the theorem and its related concepts of prior and posterior probabilities. Second, there is an explanation of the basic concepts of the Bayesian statistical inference. Last, a summary of the applicability of some of the Bayesian statistics in current literature is provided, such as Bayesian analysis of clinical trials and PKPD modeling.

Randomized Controlled TrialComparison of clinical effects of meperidine and sufentanil added to 0.5% hyperbaric bupivacaine for spinal anesthesia in patients undergoing cesarean delivery: a randomized controlled trial.
The objective of this study was to compare the effect of adding meperidine or sufentanil to hyperbaric bupivacaine in patients undergoing elective cesarean delivery (CD) under spinal anesthesia. The primary outcome was the first analgesic request time, and secondary outcomes included an analgesic requirement in the first 24 h and intraoperative and postoperative side effects. ⋯ ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT04446715).

Randomized Controlled TrialComparison of iPACK and periarticular block with adductor block alone after total knee arthroplasty: a randomized clinical trial.
The infiltration between the popliteal artery and the capsule of the posterior knee (iPACK) has been described to provide analgesia without loss of muscle strength and is effective in functional recovery. This study compared iPACK + ACB (adductor canal block) with PAI (periarticular infiltration) + ACB and ACB alone in terms of postoperative analgesia and functional improvement. ⋯ The adding of an iPACK block to the ACB improves postoperative analgesia and reduces opioid consumption. In addition, this approach improves functional performance and reduces hospital stay.

Randomized Controlled TrialDifferential effects of remimazolam and propofol on heart rate variability during anesthesia induction.
The effects of remimazolam on autonomic nervous activity have not been elucidated. We investigated the differential effects of remimazolam and propofol on autonomic nervous activity during anesthesia induction. ⋯ Remimazolam and propofol decreased autonomic nervous activity during anesthesia induction. Remimazolam preserved the balance of sympathetic and parasympathetic activities, while propofol modulated it to sympathetic dominance.

Feasibility of continuous epidural analgesia in patients with failed back surgery syndrome and spinal stenosis.
The purpose of this study was to outline the feasibility of continuous epidural analgesia in the treatment of failed back surgery syndrome (FBSS) or spinal stenosis. ⋯ Continuous epidural analgesia is feasible in patients with FBSS or spinal stenosis. This treatment enables extensive physiotherapeutic treatment even in patients with severe pain conditions and can be considered as an alternative to epidural injections. An increased complication rate in comparison to short-term perioperative or perinatal application was not observed.
