Observational StudyAssessments of perioperative respiratory pattern with non-contact vital sign monitor in children undergoing minor surgery: a prospective observational study.
Nurses routinely assess respiration of hospitalized children; however, respiratory rate measurements are technically difficult due to rapid and small chest wall movements. The aim of this study is to reveal the respiratory status of small children undergoing minor surgery with load cells placed under the bed legs, and to test the hypothesis that respiratory rate (primary variable) is slower immediately after arrival to the ward and recovers in 2 h. ⋯ UMIN (University Hospital Information Network) Clinical Registry: UMIN000045579 ( https://center6.umin.ac.jp/cgi-open-bin/ctr_e/ctr_view.cgi?recptno=R000052039 ).

Ninety-day mortality of extremely elderly patients undergoing hip fracture surgery and its association with preoperative cardiac function: a single-center retrospective study.
We investigated the 90-day mortality rate in elderly patients who underwent hip fracture surgery and the association of preoperative cardiac function with mortality. ⋯ The 90-day mortality rate in patients over 80 years old after hip fracture surgery was 7.5%. There were no significant differences in preoperative cardiac function assessed by echocardiography between the mortality and non-mortality groups. Our results suggest that there is no association or only a weak association of high BNP level with 90-day mortality in this age population.

Postoperative nausea and vomiting after artificial joint replacement surgery: comparison between remimazolam and sevoflurane, a propensity score analysis.
Remimazolam, a newly synthesized ultrashort-acting benzodiazepine, has not been previously compared with sevoflurane with regard to postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV). The aim of this study is to investigate the incidence of PONV between remimazolam and sevoflurane among patients undergoing artificial joint replacement surgery. ⋯ This study demonstrated that there was no difference in the prevalence of PONV between remimazolam and sevoflurane anesthesia in patients undergoing artificial joint replacement surgery.

Observational StudySingleton pregnancy using in vitro fertilization or intracytoplasmic sperm injection does not increase risk of bleeding in cesarean delivery: a retrospective cohort study.
Several studies indicate that assisted reproductive technology (ART) including in vitro fertilization (IVF) and intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) pregnancies carries increased risk of complications including postpartum hemorrhage (PPH). However, the association between IVF/ICSI and the bleeding risk particularly in cesarean delivery has not been systematically assessed. The aim of this study was to evaluate bleeding risk during and after cesarean delivery in parturients who conceived using IVF or ICSI. ⋯ In this study, IVF and ICSI were not associated with increasing risk of bleeding in cesarean delivery.

Randomized Controlled TrialAlkalized lidocaine in a tapered cuff suppresses endotracheal tube-induced hemodynamic changes: a randomized controlled trial.
The use of an endotracheal tube (ET) cuff filled with alkalized lidocaine (AL) can suppress ET-induced emergence phenomena, such as hypertension, tachycardia and coughing, and postoperative sore throat (POST) and hoarseness (PH). The efficacy of intracuff lidocaine may vary depending on the cuff shape, but there has been no study on the effects of a tapered cuff filled with AL. We examined whether intracuff AL suppresses ET-induced emergence phenomena, POST and PH. ⋯ AL in a tapered cuff significantly suppresses ET-induced cardiovascular changes in MBP and HR.
