Observational StudyContinuous cardiac output estimation using a new modified Fick method during off-pump coronary artery bypass graft surgery: a retrospective observational study.
Several technical aspects of the Fick method limit its use intraoperatively. A data-driven modification of the Fick method may enable its use in intraoperative settings. ⋯ The original Fick method is not reliable when oxygen extraction is low, but a modification using data-driven approach could enable continuous estimation of cardiac output during the dynamic intraoperative period with minimal bias. However, further improvements in precision and trending ability are needed.

Alleviated cerebral infarction in male mice lacking all nitric oxide synthase isoforms after middle cerebral artery occlusion.
The role of the nitric oxide synthases (NOSs) system in cerebral infarction has been examined in pharmacological studies with non-selective NOSs inhibitors. However, due to the non-specificity of the non-selective NOSs inhibitors, its role remains to be fully elucidated. We addressed this issue in mice in which neuronal, inducible, and endothelial NOS isoforms were completely disrupted. ⋯ These results provide the first evidence that the NOSs system exerts a deleterious effect against acute ischemic brain injury in the male.

Review Meta AnalysisPostoperative outcomes of pediatric patients with perioperative COVID-19 infection: a systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies.
To quantify the risk of adverse postoperative outcomes in pediatric patients with COVID-19 infection. ⋯ Perioperative COVID-19 infection was strongly associated with increased risk of PPCs, but it did not increase the risk of postoperative early mortality, the rate of postoperative ICU admission, and the length of hospital stay in pediatric patients. Our preplanned sensitivity analyses confirmed the robustness of our study findings.

Randomized Controlled TrialUltrasound evaluation of gastric emptying of high-energy semifluid solid beverage in parturients during labor at term: a randomized controlled trial.
What to intake during labor is controversial. The purpose of this study was to compare the gastric emptying of high-energy semifluid solid beverage (HESSB) versus that of carbohydrate (CHO) solution of equal calories and volume by evaluating the gastric antral cross-sectional area (CSA) using ultrasonography in parturients during labor at term. ⋯ The change of gastric antral cross-sectional area after HESSB is similar to the corresponding calories and volume of CHO and the gastric emptying of HESSB can be emptied within 2 h with better taste satisfaction and satiety in pregnant women under labor analgesia.
