Chronic diseases often accumulate with musculoskeletal (MSK) pain. However, less evidence is available on idiosyncratic patterns of chronic diseases and their relationships with the severity of MSK pain in general MSK pain populations. ⋯ Distinct patterns of chronic disease accumulation can be identified in the general MSK pain population. It seems that mental and metabolic health are at interplay with severe MSK pain. These findings suggest a potential need to screen for psychiatric and metabolic entities of health when treating working-aged people with MSK pain.Key messagesThis large study on middle-aged people with musculoskeletal pain aimed to examine the idiosyncratic patterns of chronic diseases and their relationships with the severity of musculoskeletal pain. Latent class cluster analysis identified three chronic disease clusters: Psychiatric, Metabolic, and Relatively Healthy. People with accumulated mental (Psychiatric cluster) or metabolic diseases (Metabolic cluster) experienced more severe pain than people who were relatively healthy (Relatively Healthy cluster). These findings suggest a potential need to screen for psychiatric and metabolic entities of health when treating working-aged people with MSK pain.

To evaluate an experiential student clinical addiction research program by analyzing its components, evaluation survey data, and scientific outputs. ⋯ This summer student research program successfully introduced students to addiction medicine and research, manifested by high peer-reviewed publication productivity. While our program engaged and involved committed mentors and inspired mentees to pursue professional paths in addiction research, it did not specifically incorporate attention to equity and diversity into program planning and implementation. Going forward, the program will improve equity by increasing the recruitment of trainees from disadvantaged groups and engaging underrepresented faculty.KEY MESSAGESSummer programs can be effective in engaging medical students and trainees in research early in their trajectory and inspire them to incorporate research into their careers.Programs that integrate experiential addiction research learning, i.e. mentored research activities, didactic sessions, and clinical observerships, can provide trainees with a profound understanding of substance use disorder treatment and research.

The aim of this study is to assess the outcomes of different induction therapies among mild to moderate immunological risk kidney transplants in the era tacrolimus and mycophenolate-derivate based maintenance. ⋯ This study showed no significant difference in acute rejection episodes or graft survival when using thymoglobulin or basiliximab in mild to moderate immunological risk living donor KTRs, maintained on tacrolimus and mycophenolate-based immunosuppressive regimen.

The aim of this study was to explore the relationship between the application of learning strategies and the emergence of higher-order learning behaviours among medical students in Chinese provincial undergraduate colleges, while also examining the impact of social demographic variables on the development of higher-order learning behaviours and learning strategy preferences. ⋯ The study has demonstrated a positive correlation between the utilization of learning strategies and the development of higher-order learning behaviours. This relationship has been observed in medical students attending provincial undergraduate colleges, where the adoption of enquiry-based, receptive, integrative and collaborative learning strategies has been found to significantly influence the emergence of higher-order learning behaviours.KEY MESSAGESThe implementation of learning strategies among medical students in provincial undergraduate colleges in China has a significant impact on high-level learning behaviours. The impact of high-level learning behaviours is reliant on comprehensive support from four distinct learning strategies: receptive learning, inquiry-based learning, comprehensive learning and collaborative learning. One of the most impactful learning strategies is receptive learning, particularly on high-order learning behaviours. On the other hand, reflective learning does not seem to have a significant effect.Changes in grades can significantly impact higher-order learning behaviours and affect the propensity for reflective and collaborative learning strategies.Females generally exhibit a greater preference for receptive learning strategies, while males tend to exhibit a greater preference for inquiry-based learning strategies.

Although a study found a significant increase in serum hedgehog interacting protein (HHIP) concentrations in impaired fasting blood glucose, impaired glucose tolerance and newly diagnosed T2DM patients, the variation in circulating HHIP levels in obese individuals remains unknown. ⋯ Our findings support HHIP as a potential biomarker for predicting obesity and IR. In addition, drugs targeting HHIP may be a new strategy to treat obesity.
