It is unknown which features of unipolar atrial electrogram (U-AEGM) morphology are affected by ageing and whether age-related changes in U-AEGM morphology are equally distributed throughout the right and left atria. ⋯ Age-related remodeling particularly affects BB as indicated by the decreased amount of non-SP at this location in the elderly.Key MessagesAgeing preferentially affects the morphology of unipolar atrial electrograms recorded at Bachmann's bundle. At Bachmann's bundle, the proportion of short double-, long double- and fractionated potentials increase during ageing at the expense of a decrease in the proportion of single potentials, reflecting aggravation of abnormalities in conduction. The increase in abnormal unipolar atrial electrograms at Bachmann's bundle during ageing supports the concept that Bachmann's bundle may play an important role in development of age-related arrhythmias such as atrial fibrillation.

The effect of liposomes bi-functionalized with phosphatidic acid and with a synthetic peptide derived from human apolipoprotein E has been evaluated on the aggregation features of different amyloidogenic proteins: human Amyloid β1-40 (Aβ1-40), transthyretin (TTR) variant S52P, human β2microglobulin (β2m) variants ΔN6 and D76N, Serum Amyloid A (SAA). ⋯ Thus, multifunctional liposomes perform as pharmacological chaperones with anti-amyloidogenic activity, with a promising potential for the treatment of a number of protein-misfolding diseases.Key messageAmyloidosis is a group of diseases, each due to a specific protein misfolding.Anti-amyloidogenic nanoparticles have been gaining the utmost importance as a potential treatment for protein misfolding disorders.Liposomes bi-functionalized with phosphatidic acid and with a synthetic peptide derived from human apolipoprotein E showed anti-amyloidogenic activity.

To investigate possible persistent performance deficits after severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection in elite athletes. ⋯ Aerobic performance seems compromised even weeks after infection. Simultaneously, anaerobic performance seemed to be spared. Because of the potential detrimental effects on the immune system, caution might be advised with high-intensity exposure until aerobic performance is restored.KEY MESSAGESElite football players' aerobic performance seems to be affected for weeks after they return to sports after a SARS-CoV-2 infection.Similarly, anaerobic performance tests showed no discernible changes between both before and after SARS-CoV-2 infections.Regular YYIR testing is recommended to monitor aerobic performance after SARS-CoV-2 infection.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by infection with SARS-CoV-2, can lead to post-COVID-19 condition, a secondary syndrome of persistent and new post-acute symptoms, but evidence on this syndrome is still scarce. ⋯ Our study adds to growing evidence that even a mild course of COVID-19 poses a risk for developing a post-COVID-19 condition. Females and those with initial symptoms including fatigue, breathing difficulties, and cognitive symptoms seem more likely to also experience post COVID-19 symptoms several months after infection.KEY MESSAGESEven a mild course of COVID-19 poses a risk for developing a post-COVID-19 condition.Females seem more likely to develop a post-COVID-19 condition. Those with initial symptoms including fatigue, breathing difficulties, and cognitive symptoms seem more likely to develop a post-COVID-19 condition.

Long-term exposure to air pollution is known to be harmful to preterm birth (PTB), but little is known about the short-term effects. This study aims to quantify the short-term effect of particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter ≤ 2.5 μm (PM2.5), ≤10 μm (PM10) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) on PTB. ⋯ Maternal exposure to NO2, PM2.5 and PM10 before delivery has a significant risk for PTB, particularly in the cold season.Key messagesMaternal exposure to NO2 was significant associated with an increased risk of preterm birth at the day 1 before delivery.Particle matter (PM2.5 and PM10) showed a significant short-term effect on preterm birth in the cold season. The effects of air pollutants on preterm birth was greater in the cold season compared with the warm season.
