Haemodialysis (HD) patients are predisposed to physical ailments, and their occurrence of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) could potentially lead to a more unfavourable prognosis. However, the impact of SARS-CoV-2 (Omicron variant) infection on the prognosis of HD patients remains unclear. This study aimed to explore the impact of Omicron variant infection on the prognosis of HD patients. ⋯ Omicron variant infection was associated with increased mortality risk in HD patients, and Omicron infection worsen the prognosis of HD patients. Enhancing immune protection against SARS-CoV-2 is crucial for HD patients during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) can precipitate a deterioration of an individual's physical performance and overall health. Evidence suggests that, along with pulmonary functions, several other factors are related to the significant impairment of walking performance in individuals with COPD. This study compared the depressive symptoms, health status, upper and lower extremity functions, and peak oxygen uptake (VO2peak) in a group of individuals with COPD based on walking performance using a cutoff distance of 350 m in the six-minute walking test (6MWT). The study also investigated the associations between these factors and walking performance. ⋯ This study shed light on the association of depressive symptoms, health status, extremity function, and VO2peak with walking performance, providing valuable insights that may impact the management and care of individuals with COPD.

The prevalence of human papillomavirus (HPV) genotype and cervical neoplasia in women older than 64 years, who are outside the age demographic of cervical cancer screening in China, has been under-researched. This study conducts a retrospective analysis of women from a tertiary hospital in Guangzhou, with the aim to offer valuable insights for cervical cancer prevention and control in elderly women. The study incorporated 876 women, all aged 64 and above. ⋯ In conclusion, the burden of HPV infection is significant among women over 64 years in Guangzhou. Re-evaluation of cervical cancer screening strategies for women after the age of 64 is imperative. Moreover, the HPV 16/18/52/58 genotype model could serve as an alternative triage approach to identify histological CIN2+ among elderly women with HPV-positive/NILM status.

Within normal variation, higher haemoglobin (Hb) levels are associated with unhealthier body composition, adverse metabolism and cardiovascular disease (CVD)-related mortality. Global longitudinal strain (GLS) is a direct, well validated and reproducible echocardiographic measure for the evaluation of cardiac contractile function, providing additional prognostic value for prediction of a variety of cardiac events. This study investigated the relation between Hb levels and cardiac function measures, including GLS, in a Finnish midlife population. ⋯ Higher Hb levels are associated with an adverse metabolic and inflammatory profile and more adverse cardiac function measures, including GLS, in both sexes in midlife.

Tick-borne pathogens pose a major threat to human health worldwide. Understanding the epidemiology of tick-borne diseases to reduce their impact on human health requires models covering large geographic areas and considering both the abiotic traits that affect tick presence, as well as the vertebrates used as hosts, vegetation, and land use. Herein, we integrated the public information available for Europe regarding the variables that may affect habitat suitability for ticks and hosts and tested five machine learning algorithms (MLA) for predicting the distribution of four prominent tick species across Europe. ⋯ Flexible MLA-driven models may offer several advantages over traditional models. We anticipate that these results may be extrapolated to other regions and combinations of tick-vertebrates. These results highlight the potential of MLA for inference in ecology and provide a background for the evolution of a completely automatized tool to calculate the seasonality of ticks for early warning systems aimed at preventing tick-borne diseases.
