Almost always, Congo red-stained amyloid between polariser and analyser is said to show "green birefringence" or "apple-green birefringence". In 2010, we found that not all published images showed green, and not all that did showed only green. This systematic review of more recent papers was to find if there had been any improvement in the accuracy of reporting. ⋯ There is widespread and increasing inaccuracy of reporting of colours seen in Congo red-stained amyloid. People persist in saying "green birefringence" or "apple-green birefringence", even when no green is seen, or there are also other colours. Few appear to appreciate that the other colours are genuine, respectable, and helpful, the physical optical principles that explain the colours are now understood, and the best expression to use is anomalous colours.KEY MESSAGE"Green birefringence" and "apple-green birefringence" are inappropriate terms to describe the findings in amyloid stained with Congo red and examined between crossed polariser and analyser, because green is not always seen, and even when it is, other colours are commonly seen as well. The proportions of colour images showing any green and green alone, and the proportion of descriptions that agreed with illustrated colours, significantly decreased in 2010-2020 compared with earlier. The most appropriate and scientific description of the findings is anomalous colours.

Background: The objectives of the present study are to understand the longitudinal variability in COVID-19 reported cases at the county level and to associate the observed rates of infection with the adoption and lifting of stay-home orders. Materials and Methods: The study uses the trajectory of the pandemic in a county and controls for social and economic risk factors, physical environment, and health behaviors to elucidate the social determinants contributing to the observed rates of infection. Results and conclusion: Results indicated that counties with higher percentages of young individuals, racial and ethnic minorities and, higher population densities experienced greater difficulty suppressing transmission. ⋯ S. are not directly associated with adoption and lifting of stay-home orders. Disadvantages in sociodemographic determinants negatively influence the rate of COVID-19 spread. Counties with more young individuals, racial and ethnic minorities, and higher population densities have greater difficulty suppressing transmission.

Detailed analysis targeting B cell subgroups was considered crucial in monitoring autoimmune diseases and treatment responses. Thus, precisely describing the phenotypes of B cell differentiation and their variation in primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS) is particularly needed. ⋯ Our study presented a reliable analysis by flow cytometry to cover the principal B cell subtypes. These different stages of B lymphocytes may have implications for evaluating the activation of pSS and other autoimmune diseases and treatment efficacy.KEY MESSAGESB cell subsets play a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS) and other autoimmune diseases. A practical and accurate flow cytometry method to profile B cell phenotypes in peripheral blood of healthy adults is especially essential.Additionally, we presented reliable reference ranges for B cell subsets in regards to the local population. Age- and gender-related analyses are available to better understand their influence in immune status and treatment outcome. The distribution of B-cell subsets is found substantially altered in patients with pSS, bringing novel avenues for pSS research in the future.

Background: Vertebral compression fractures (VCFs) often occur in patients with osteoporosis. These fractures can also lead to postural changes. Several studies have shown that patients with vertebral compression fractures have a restrictive pattern in their pulmonary function. ⋯ MVV showed significant progress at both 1 and 3 weeks after discharge. Forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1) and maximal inspiratory muscle strength significantly improved 1 week after discharge. Conclusion: Taking all the data together, PVP not only can resolve severe back pain but can also provide excellent improvements in MVV and chest mobility in patients with vertebral compression fractures.

Changes in the incidence of melanoma in children and adolescents have been reported in Europe and in the USA in the recent decades. ⋯ The incidence of cutaneous melanoma has clearly increased among the young in Finland, especially among adolescents. No evidence for overdiagnosis of Spitzoid melanomas as the underlying cause of the increased incidence was observed.Key messageA nationwide retrospective re-evaluation of the cutaneous melanomas recorded in the Finnish Cancer Registry among patients aged 0-19 years in Finland in 1990-2014 revealed an approximately 4-fold increase in the incidence. The increase in the incidence was most prominent among adolescents and in the Spitzoid melanoma subtype. Our results contrast those reported in other countries, where the incidence of melanoma among adolescents has declined.
