This article reports the results of a study conducted to assess the mediating effects of grit and learning agility on the relationship between academic burnout and learning engagement among undergraduate students. ⋯ These results indicate the necessity of developing an educational programme that focuses not only on reducing academic burnout but also on improving learning agility to increase undergraduate students' learning engagement. This study contributes to the development of a curriculum aimed at increasing the effectiveness of university education, promoting learning engagement, and reducing academic burnout.KEY MESSAGEOur study reports that academic burnout has both a direct effect on learning engagement and an indirect effect via learning agility. Learning agility mediates the relationship between academic burnout and learning engagement among undergraduate students.Although grit has been reported by many previous studies to mediate the relationship between the tendency to pursue happiness and the willingness to continue learning and effectively improving one's academic achievement and ability, our study did not find any mediating effect via grit in this context.

To assess the relationship between glucose intolerance statuses at baseline defined as normal glucose tolerance (NGT), pre-diabetes, newly diagnosed (NDM) and known diabetes mellitus (KDM) and all-cause hospitalization among Iranian men and women during 20 years of follow-up. ⋯ Pre-diabetes, NDM, and KDM were associated with increased hospitalization rates during long-term follow-up. Interventions such as lifestyle modification or pharmacological therapies aiming to slow down the pre-diabetes and fair control of diabetes might potentially decrease the rate of hospitalization.Key messagesNDM and KDM status both increased rate of all-cause hospitalization.CVD and T2DM complication were the most common cause of hospitalization among patients with diabetes.Hospitalization due to recurrent CHD was significantly higher in men with diabetes than their female counterparts.

Thalassaemia is one of the most common inherited monogenic diseases worldwide with a heavy global health burden. Considering its high prevalence in low and middle-income countries, a cheap, accurate and high-throughput screening test of thalassaemia prior to a more expensive confirmatory diagnostic test is urgently needed. ⋯ For the first time, we constructed an inexpensive, accurate and high-throughput classification model based on MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry quantification of haemoglobin chains and demonstrated its great potential in rapid screening of thalassaemia in large populations.Key messagesThalassaemia is one of the most common inherited monogenic diseases worldwide with a heavy global health burden.We constructed a machine learning model based on MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry quantification of haemoglobin chains to screen for thalassaemia.

Brucellosis is a severe public health problem in China. However, analysis on related infection events is lacking. We performed a systematic analysis of brucellosis laboratory infection and vaccine infection events from 2006 to 2019 in China based on the published literatures. ⋯ However, cluster S2 vaccine strain infection events caused by vaccination and production were mainly observed in Northern China. Strengthening vaccination skills, personal protection, and improving the biosafety management of vaccine production and implementing regular risk surveillance is mandatory. Our analysis provides helpful clues for control of public health events involving brucellosis, as well as implementing intervention strategies is urgent.

Breast cancer survivors may be at risk of experiencing rotator cuff disease after treatment. Biomechanical alterations following surgery potentially predispose survivors to develop this disorder. ⋯ There are kinematic alterations in breast cancer survivors that may promote future development of rotator cuff disease. Compensations may begin as protective and progress to more harmful alterations with time.KEY MESSAGESScapular kinematics varied with surgery and pain interaction: upward rotation was lower and internal rotation higher in mastectomy-pain group, while upward rotation was higher and internal rotation lower in reconstruction-pain group.Kinematics alterations may also be associated with time since surgery, as the mastectomy-pain group had longer time since surgery than the reconstruction-pain group.Kinematic alterations may transition from protective to harmful over time.In-depth analyses by reconstruction type are needed to determine surgery-specific effects on kinematics and their potential impact on the development of rotator cuff disease.
