Effects of hypertension on the outcomes of COVID-19: a multicentre retrospective cohort study.
Objectives: Hypertension is thought to be a contributor to mortality in coronavirus disease 2019 patients; however, limited clinical data on the outcomes of COVID-19 in patients with hypertension are available. Methods: This study was designed to confirm whether hypertension affects the outcomes of COVID-19. Results: A total of 983 patients with COVID-19 (female, 48%; male, 52%) were enrolled. ⋯ In addition, compared with hypertensive patients who survived COVID-19, non-survivors had more pre-existing conditions, including cardiovascular diseases and stroke, higher blood pressure on admission, more severe inflammation, and more liver and kidney damage. Conclusion: Hypertension does not affect the outcome of COVID-19, which is different than the conclusions drawn in other studies. However, the 28-day mortality and total 60-day mortality rates of hypertensive patients (age ≥ 70) with COVID-19 were significantly elevated, and compared with the group of survivors, non-surviving COVID-19 patients with hypertension were older, had more basic diseases and had a more severe clinical condition.

Prevention, treatment, and risk factors of deep vein thrombosis in critically ill patients in Zhejiang province, China: a multicenter, prospective, observational study.
The aim of this study is to investigate the prevention and treatment patterns of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in critically ill patients and to explore the risk factors for DVT in people from Zhejiang Province, China. ⋯ DVT prophylaxis is widely performed in ICU patients. Prophylaxis is an independent protective factor for DVT occurrence. The most common treatment of DVT patients is LMWH, although it might increase the rate of bleeding.Key messagesThis is the only multicenter and prospective study of DVT in ICUs in China.d-dimer levels were independently associated with DVT in ICU patients.Prophylaxis was an independent protective factor for DVT occurrence in ICU.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is one of the main cardiac arrhythmias associated with higher risk of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. AF can cause adverse symptoms and reduced quality of life. ⋯ Despite the limitations of rate control treatment, which may not be effective in preventing disease progression or in reducing symptoms in highly symptomatic patients, it is widely used for almost all patients with atrial fibrillation. Although rate control is one of the first line management of all patient with atrial fibrillation, several issues remain debateable.

Alzheimer's disease (AD), the most predominant cause of dementia, has evolved tremendously with an escalating frequency, mainly affecting the elderly population. An effective means of delaying, preventing, or treating AD is yet to be achieved. The failure rate of dementia drug trials has been relatively higher than in other disease-related clinical trials. Hence, multi-targeted therapeutic approaches are gaining attention in pharmacological developments. ⋯ The virtual screening, molecular docking, and molecular dynamics simulation studies revealed the potential of these multi-enzyme targeted ligands. Among the studied ligands, 6Z5 seems to have the best binding potential and forms a stable complex with BACE-1 and γ-secretase. We recommend the synthesis of 6Z5 for future in-vitro and in-vivo studies.

Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is an autoimmune disease mainly characterised by vascular thrombosis and pregnancy morbidity. APS has broad spectrum of clinical manifestations. The digestive system involvement of antiphospholipid syndrome is a critical but under-recognised condition. ⋯ Key messagesAntiphospholipid syndrome is a multi-organ, multi-system disease and its clinical manifestation spectrum is gradually expanding. Since the first diagnosis of APS, the clinical manifestations of digestive system have been reported successively. This narrative review describes the major digestive system manifestations of APS and illustrates the epidemiology, pathophysiology and the role of therapeutic strategies of these patients.
