This study was designed to assess the epidemiological trends and outcomes associated with Hepatorenal Syndrome (HRS). ⋯ Total hospitalizations, hospitalizations for women and the mean age for HRS hospitalizations were on the rise between 2008 and 2018. However, the inpatient mortality declined.KEY MESSAGESIn the United States, there was a trend towards increasing hospitalizations and mean age for HRS.Although a male predominance was noted, HRS hospitalizations for women were on the rise. The inpatient mortality for HRS hospitalizations was on a decline and may indicate significant improvements in management.

This study aims to explore the relevance between YKL-40 and recurrence and progression of bladder cancer, and determine whether YKL-40 can be used as a potential target in patients with bladder cancer. ⋯ YKL-40 promoted the migration and invasion of bladder cancer cells by up regulating the EMT gene expression. The YKL-40 expression is closely related to the invasion and migration of bladder cancer.

Circular RNA microarray analysis showed hsa_circ_0010235 (circ_0010235) was highly upregulated in non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients; however, its role in carcinogenesis and development of NSCLC cells was unrevealed. Here, we intended to investigate role and mechanism of circ_0010235 in NSCLC proliferation, migration and invasion. ⋯ circ_0010235 could be a novel identified oncogenic circRNA in NSCLC, and targeting miR-338-3p/KIF2A axis was one regulatory mechanism underlying circ_0010235.KEY MESSAGECirc_0010235 was an upregulated circRNA in NSCLC patients and cells.Interfering circ_0010235 restrained NSCLC cell proliferation and metastasis in vitro and in vivo.miR-338-3p per se suppressed NSCLC in vitro and its downregulation diminished the tumour-suppressive role of circ_0010235 blockage in NSCLC cells.miR-338-3p could downstream target KIF2A and be sponged by circ_0010235.

Red blood cell distribution width (RDW) has been assessed during COVID-19 patient hospitalization, however, further research should be done to evaluate RDW from routine community blood tests, before infection, as a risk factor for COVID-19 related hospitalization and mortality. ⋯ High RDW values obtained from community blood tests are associated with greater odds of hospitalization and mortality for patients with COVID-19.KEY MESSAGESRDW measures before SARS-CoV-2 infection is a predictive factor for hospitalization and mortality.RDW threshold of 14.5% provides high sensitivity and specificity for COVID-19 related mortality, comparatively to other blood tests.Patient records should be accessed by clinicians for prior RDW results, if available, followed by further monitoring.

Accurately identifying persons with addiction is critically important for effectively targeting treatment and harm reduction interventions. Misdiagnosis of addictive disorders can lead to a cascade of negative outcomes, including stigma, discontinuation of needed medications, undue scrutiny of both patients and physicians, and even criminal consequences. A recent study raises significant concerns about the accuracy of diagnosis code data, likely rooted in confusingly-worded International Classification of Diseases (ICD)-9 and ICD-10 codes and a general misunderstanding of the difference between addiction and physiologic dependence. ⋯ Key messagesIt is not surprising that physicians frequently conflate patients with "addiction" and "dependence" when the ICD terms used to code for addiction are themselves misleading. ICD codes have not been updated to reflect what we know about the nature of addiction, unlike those in the DSM-5. This commentary calls for the ICD to update their codes to reflect current understanding of addiction.
