Objective While studies have documented how metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) can contribute to cardiovascular disease (CVD), whether MASLD is associated with myocardial infarction (MI) remains debateable. Herein, we systematically reviewed published articles and performed a meta-analysis to determine the relationship between MASLD and MI risk. Methods PubMed, MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science, CNKI, CBM, VIP, and WanFang databases were searched, and the DerSimonian Laird method was used to obtain hazard ratios (HRs) for binary variables to assess the correlation between MASLD and MI risk. ⋯ Subgroup analysis of the study design demonstrated a stronger relationship between MASLD and MI in retrospective studies but not in prospective studies. Subgroup analysis based on the follow-up duration revealed the association of MASLD with MI risk in cases with < 3 years of follow-up but not with ≥3 years of follow-up. Conclusion MASLD increases the risk of MI, independent of traditional risk factors.

Rapidly progressive interstitial lung disease (RP-ILD) is a frequent and serious manifestation of idiopathic inflammatory myopathy (IIM) associated with poor outcomes. Plasma exchange (PE) can quickly remove pathogenic substances from the blood. Therefore, PE may be efficacious in IIM patients who have elevated levels of autoantibodies, cytokines and chemokines, fighting for time for immunosuppressive therapy. However, the value of adding PE to immunosuppressants remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to determine the short-term outcomes, including the survival rate at 6 months and change of the laboratory data, of PE in combination with immunosuppressants and/or biologics in the treatment of IIM-RP-ILD. ⋯ The application of PE therapy plus treatment with corticosteroids, immunosuppressants and/or biologics was effective for patients with IIM-RP-ILD. PE may have additional supportive effect in intractable disease.

The small island nations, territories, and states dotting the Pacific are among the most disproportionately affected populations worldwide in the face of climate change. Sea level rise coupled with increased tropical storms contribute to seawater incursion, flooding, personal injury, trauma, and death. They face an existential threat due to the consequences of global warming, specifically ice melt resulting in sea level rise, repercussions for which they are not historically culpable. ⋯ Just as crucial to the narrative of the Marshallese people is a fundamental indigenous knowledge of their surroundings and an inseparable relationship to the environment, aquatic animals, and communities around them, denoting a holistic living system. Though the outlook is precarious, solutions centering on lifestyle interventions that are informed by Indigenous cultural strengths can provide a responsive framework and a ray of hope, offering potential solutions to these two. This short perspective highlights the RMI as a case study of the challenges the Pacific Island nations bear, from a legacy of annexation to the modern threat of climate change, compounded by health disparities.

The World Wide Web and the advancement of computer technology in the 1960s and 1990s respectively set the ground for a substantial and simultaneous change in many facets of our life, including medicine, health care, and medical education. The traditional didactic approach has shifted towards more dynamic and interactive methods, leveraging technologies such as simulation tools, virtual reality, and online platforms. At the forefront is the remarkable evolution that has revolutionized how medical knowledge is accessed, disseminated, and integrated into pedagogical practices. ⋯ This review includes the multifaceted applications of the metaverse in medical education, outlining both its benefits and challenges. Through insightful case studies and examples, it highlights the innovative potential of the metaverse as a platform for immersive learning experiences. Moreover, the review addresses the role of emerging technologies in shaping the post-pandemic future of medical education, ultimately culminating in a series of recommendations tailored for medical institutions aiming to successfully capitalize on revolutionary changes.

Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a life-threatening disease, especially in paediatric population. Symptoms of paediatric PH are non-specific. Accurate detection of paediatric PH is helpful for early treatment and mortality reduction. Therefore, we assessed the overall performance of brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) and N-terminal brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) for diagnosing PH in paediatric population. ⋯ Both BNP and NT-proBNP are good markers for differentiating paediatric PH patients from non-PH individuals.
