Multicenter StudyDysnatremia, vasopressin, atrial natriuretic peptide and mortality in patients with community-acquired pneumonia: results from the german competence network CAPNETZ.
Dysnatremia is a frequent finding in patients with community acquired pneumonia (CAP) and a predictor of mortality. We studied the relation between dysnatremia, comorbidities and CT-pro-AVP and MR-proANP. ⋯ HypoN is common at admission among CAP patients and is independently associated with mortality. HyperN is rare at admission among CAP patients but is also independently associated with mortality. The combination of sodium and CT-pro-AVP and MR-proANP levels achieved the highest prediction of mortality.

Multicenter Study Observational StudyPersistent systemic inflammation and symptoms of depression among patients with COPD in the ECLIPSE cohort.
Depression is highly prevalent among patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). The relationship of depression with systemic inflammation in COPD remains unknown. The objective of this observational study was to compare depression scores at baseline and after 36 months follow-up between COPD patients with persistent systemic inflammation (PSI) and never inflamed patients (NI) in the ECLIPSE cohort. ⋯ The study was sponsored by GlaxoSmithKline.

Multicenter StudySeverity and outcomes of community acquired pneumonia in asthmatic patients.
Limited information is available about clinical outcomes and microbiology of community-acquired pneumonia in asthma. ⋯ Asthmatics were younger and showed similar clinical presentation. Consistently with PSI, asthmatics showed similar outcomes than the general population. The microbial aetiology of CAP in asthma did not differ from the general population and antibiotic therapy should follow current guidelines.
