Randomized Controlled TrialRelationship between daily physical activity and exercise capacity in patients with COPD.
Exercise training programmes for patients with COPD are effective in improving exercise capacity. The few trials that have investigated the effects of exercise programmes on daily physical activity show contradictory results. ⋯ A moderate to weak relationship was found between daily physical activity and exercise capacity. These results strengthen our beliefs that exercise interventions need to target not only exercise capacity but also behaviour change with regard to daily physical activity to achieve improvements in both parameters.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter StudyEfficacy and safety of fluticasone/formoterol combination therapy in patients with moderate-to-severe asthma.
The inhaled corticosteroid, fluticasone propionate, and the long-acting β(2)-adrenergic agonist, formoterol fumarate, are both highly effective treatments for bronchial asthma. This study (NCT00393952/EudraCT number: 2006-005989-39) compared the efficacy and safety of fluticasone/formoterol combination therapy (flutiform(®); 250/10 μg) administered twice daily (b.i.d.) via a single aerosol inhaler, with the individual components (fluticasone 250 μg b.i.d.; formoterol 10 μg b.i.d.), in adult and adolescent patients with moderate-to-severe asthma. ⋯ Fluticasone/formoterol combination therapy will provide clinicians with an efficacious alternative treatment option for patients with moderate-to-severe asthma.

Randomized Controlled TrialAssessing efficacy of indacaterol in moderate and severe COPD patients: a 12-week study in an Asian population.
This post hoc analysis evaluated the efficacy of indacaterol, a novel inhaled once-daily long-acting β(2)-agonist, by disease severity (GOLD 2005) in patients with moderate-to-severe COPD from six Asian countries/areas (Hong Kong, India, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Taiwan). ⋯ NCT00794157.

Randomized Controlled TrialWalking exercise response to bronchodilation in mild COPD: a randomized trial.
Patients with mild chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) present abnormal ventilatory mechanics during exercise and may require bronchodilator therapy. However, bronchodilation does not enhance cycling exercise tolerance in these patients whereas walking may be more sensitive to the effects of bronchodilation. ⋯ Bronchodilation did not improve walking endurance in patients with mild COPD despite small physiological benefits of uncertain clinical relevance.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyA prospective, randomised trial of pneumothorax therapy: manual aspiration versus conventional chest tube drainage.
No consensus exists on the exact treatment of pneumothorax (PTX). Some guidelines are proposing manual aspiration (MA) to be preferred over tube thoracostomy (TT) in uncomplicated primary spontaneous pneumothorax (PSP). However, only a few studies reported a direct comparison of both methods. Our aim was to re-evaluate this with a randomised trial in a single centre in the Netherlands. ⋯ MA is simple, safe, cheap, minimal invasive in uncomplicated PSP/traumatic PTX with similar success and recurrence rates and a shorter hospital stay in comparison to TT and therefore the treatment of choice.
