Globally, burns are among some of the most devastating injuries and account for more than 265,000 deaths worldwide. In Bangladesh alone, nearly 3000 people die annually from burn-related injuries. This study was conducted at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka, Bangladesh in June of 2016. ⋯ The average total body surface area (TBSA) sustained in these cases was 46.4%, with 65% of deaths attributable to complications from flame burns. These findings highlight the frequency and severity of burn injuries, identify vulnerable population groups and list common causes of burns in this large developing country of 160 million people. Furthermore, these findings may be applicable to the epidemiology and outcome of burns in similar low and middle income countries.

Majority of burn injuries occur in developing world. There have been many advances in burn care management. But this advance comes at a price of ever increasing burn sequel of scarring. Burn scar contractures, in spite of being preventable, continue to be a common reality in our world. This paper aims to evaluate the lacunae in burn care leading to formation of contractures, to evaluate common sites of contractures, practice of advising splintage and anti-deformity positioning. ⋯ Attempt has been made to identify the factors affecting the prevalence of burn scar contractures. Authors recommend that efforts be made for improving the knowledge of the treating doctors. Also, efforts should be made to increase awareness of burn prevention and emergent management.

Oil tanker truck disasters have been reported worldwide; however, the circumstances, causes, and health effects of these disasters have not been described. To address this gap, we performed a systematic review using PRISMA criteria to better understand this public health problem and identify prevention targets. ⋯ These data highlight the circumstances, causes, and health burden related to oil tanker truck disasters. Most began as collisions or rollovers, but nearly half of the fatalities involved scooping. The findings suggest opportunities to promote road safety, improve scene safety and security protocols used by drivers and first responders, and promote public understanding of the dangers of scooping to prevent mass casualty disasters from disabled tanker trucks, particularly in LMIC.

Increased extravascular lung water (EVLW) correlates with pulmonary morbidity and mortality in critical illness. The extravascular lung water index (EVLWI), which reflects the degree of EVLW in an individual, increases in the fluid reabsorption stage rather than the initial resuscitation stage in severe burn cases. While many factors contribute to EVLWI variation, the risk factors contributing to its abnormal elevation in severe burns remain unclear. The aim of this study was to identify the risk factors and associated limit values for abnormal elevation of EVLWI during the fluid reabsorption stage in a cohort of severely burned adults. ⋯ Burn size and ITBVI are the independent risk factors for EVLWI abnormality during the fluid reabsorption stage in severely burned adults. The limit values for predicting a supranormal EVLWI in those patients are 65.5% TBSA for burn size and 845ml/m2 for ITBVI.

Electronic cigarettes (EC) have been reported to be associated with burns secondary to explosions of the device or battery, or contact from overheating, resulting in flame, contact or chemical burns. In addition to this, there have also been reported cases of soft tissue and bony trauma with or without associated burns. Using collective evidence, this review aims to summarise all reported burns associated with ECs, and its implications on immediate management with a particular focus on surgical treatment. ⋯ EC-associated burn injury results in combined thermal and chemical burns, which should be managed in tandem. Explosion injuries sustained whilst using the device may result in both facial trauma or inhalation injury and therefore should be reviewed with a high index of clinical suspicion. It is noted that there is no agreed standard for management for such burns by specialist bodies in the UK. We suggested a treatment algorithm to provide guidance for the burn injuries associated with ECs.
