Randomized Controlled TrialBag-Valve-Mask versus Laryngeal Mask Airway Ventilation in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation with Continuous Compressions: A Simulation Study.
The 2017 International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR) guideline recommends that Emergency Medical Service (EMS) providers can perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) with synchronous or asynchronous ventilation until an advanced airway has been placed. In the current literature, limited data on CPR performed with continuous compressions and asynchronous ventilation with bag-valve-mask (BVM) are available. ⋯ The results of this study show that asynchronous BVM ventilation with continuous chest compressions is a reliable and effective strategy during CPR under simulation conditions. The clinical impact of these findings in actual cardiac arrest patients should be evaluated with further studies at real-life scenes.

Randomized Controlled TrialComparing Training Techniques in Personal Protective Equipment Use.
Physicians' management of hazardous material (HAZMAT) incidents requires personal protective equipment (PPE) utilization to ensure the safety of victims, facilities, and providers; therefore, providing effective and accessible training in its use is crucial. While an emphasis has been placed on the importance of PPE, there is debate about the most effective training methods. Circumstances may not allow for a traditional in-person demonstration; an accessible video training may provide a useful alternative. ⋯ In this pilot study, video and in-person training were equally effective in training for donning and doffing Level C PPE, with similar error rates in both modalities. Further research into this subject with an appropriately powered study is warranted to determine whether this equivalence persists using a larger sample size.

Randomized Controlled TrialSerum Copeptin Levels Predict the Return of Spontaneous Circulation and the Short-Term Prognosis of Patients with Out-of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest: A Randomized Control Study.
Early and accurate prediction of survival to hospital discharge following resuscitation after cardiac arrest (CA) is a major challenge. Biomarkers can be used for early and accurate prediction of survival and prognosis following resuscitation after CA, but none of those identified so far are sufficient by themselves. ⋯ The serum copeptin level may serve as a guide in diagnostic decision making to predict ROSC in patients undergoing CPR and determining the short-term prognosis of patients with ROSC.

Randomized Controlled TrialUsing Standardized Checklists Increase the Completion Rate of Critical Actions in an Evacuation from the Operating Room: A Randomized Controlled Simulation Study.
Hospital evacuations of patients with special needs are extremely challenging, and it is difficult to train hospital workers for this rare event.Hypothesis/Problem:Researchers developed an in-situ simulation study investigating the effect of standardized checklists on the evacuation of a patient under general anesthesia from the operating room (OR) and hypothesized that checklists would improve the completion rate of critical actions and decrease evacuation time. ⋯ Standardized checklists increase the completion rate of pre-defined critical actions in evacuations out of the OR, which likely improves patient safety. Checklist use did not have a significant effect on total evacuation time.

Randomized Controlled TrialHigh Tourniquet Failure Rates Among Non-Medical Personnel Do Not Improve with Tourniquet Training, Including Combat Stress Inoculation: A Randomized Controlled Trial.
The rate of failing to apply a tourniquet remains high. ⋯ This study found high rates of failure in tourniquet application immediately after successful completion of tourniquet training. These rates did not improve with tourniquet training, including CSI.
