ReviewAnswering the Call: How to Establish a Dentoalveolar Surgery Mission in Low- and Middle-Income Countries.
Addressing access to oral health care in many low- to middle-income countries is a complicated issue. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons may help engage with vulnerable populations through carefully planned dentoalveolar mission trips. ⋯ During the mission, methods for protecting privacy, delivering treatment that is standard of care, and sanitation/sterilization options are reviewed. Ethical considerations include avoiding exploitation of vulnerable populations, offending local hosts, need for data collection, and long-term mission sustainability.

Robotic surgery is no longer a fiction and its clinical applications are rapidly developing. Robotic surgery is increasingly used because of its minimal invasiveness. This article provides an overview of robotic surgery and its current applications in oral and maxillofacial surgery and implant dentistry. ⋯ In the United States, the first robotic dental surgery system was cleared by the Food and Drug Administration for dental implant procedures in 2017. At the end of 2017, the world's first autonomous dental implant placement system was developed by Zhao and colleagues in China. This so-called intelligent robot has a high degree of autonomy, can automatically adjust during intraoperative procedures, and can execute surgical tasks directly on patients without any apparent control by a surgeon.

The immune system has a vital role in the development, establishment, and progression of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). Immune evasion of cancer cells leads to progression of HNSCC. ⋯ This article provides an overview of the interaction between immune infiltrating cells in the tumor microenvironment, and the immunologic principles related to HNSCC. Current immunotherapeutic strategies and emerging results from ongoing clinical trials are presented.

ReviewMultidisciplinary Team Planning for Patients with Head and Neck Cancer.
The multidisciplinary team planning conference is critical in the evaluation and management of patients with head and neck cancer. The management is complex and dictates the care of a multidisciplinary team for optimal results. ⋯ Second, the team improves the accuracy of diagnosis and staging on which to base the most appropriate treatment. Third, the team improves the outcomes of treatment by appealing to the best available evidence, by following clinical practice guidelines and treatment algorithms, and by engaging in clinical research trials.

ReviewOral Surgery Patient Safety Concepts in Anesthesia.
An effective office emergency preparedness plan for the oral and maxillofacial surgery office can be developed through the use of well-designed checklists, cognitive aids, and regularly scheduled in situ simulations with debriefings. In order to achieve this goal, the hierarchal culture of medicine and dentistry must be overcome, and an inclusive team concept embraced by all members of the staff. Technologic advancements in office automation now make it possible to create interactive cognitive aids. These enhance office emergency training and provide a means for more rapid retrieval of essential information and guidance during both simulations and a real crisis.
