Temperature gradient between brain tissue and arterial blood mirrors the flow-metabolism relationship in uninjured brain: an experimental study.
The purpose of the present experimental study was to determine the feasibility and usefulness of brain temperature measurement (T(br)) and the calculated difference between brain temperature and arterial blood temperature (DeltaT(br-a)) in uninjured brain during variations of cerebral perfusion pressure (CPP) and concomitant changes of the regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF). ⋯ The temperature difference between brain tissue and arterial blood DeltaT(br-a) mainly reflects the cerebral blood flow-brain tissue oxygenation-metabolism relationship as far as the estimation of the individual lower cerebral autoregulation threshold.

Cardioprotective effects of cyclosporine A in an in vivo model of myocardial ischemia and reperfusion.
Recent evidence indicates that reperfusion of the heart after a period of ischemia leads to the opening of the mitochondrial permeability transition pore (MPTP). The aim of this study was to investigate cardioprotective effects of cyclosporine A (CsA), an inhibitor of the MPTP, in an in vivo model of myocardial ischemia and reperfusion. ⋯ CsA reduced the cardiac damage associated with ischemia-reperfusion injury of the heart. The cardioprotective effects of CsA might be associated with the protection of mitochondria and the inhibition of caspase-3 activity. It also suggests that the MPTP might play an important role in cardiomyocytes death after ischemia-reperfusion injury.

The beta-adrenoceptor antagonist propranolol counteracts anti-inflammatory effects of isoflurane in rat endotoxemia.
Recent studies suggest that volatile anaesthetics have anti-inflammatory and preconditioning properties and that beta-adrenoceptors are involved in the signalling pathways for these effects. Concurrently, the blockade of beta-adrenoceptors has been shown to augment the release of inflammatory mediators in response to pro-inflammatory stimuli. We therefore aimed to investigate whether the beta-adrenoceptor antagonist propranolol might modulate the anti-inflammatory effects of isoflurane on the systemic and pulmonary release of pro-inflammatory cytokines in endotoxemic rats. ⋯ Our results indicate for the first time, that blockade of beta-adrenoceptors counteracts the anti-inflammatory effects of isoflurane in endotoxemic rats.

Anti-inflammatory effects of sevoflurane and mild hypothermia in endotoxemic rats.
Volatile anesthetics and hypothermia attenuate the inflammatory response. We aimed to compare the anti-inflammatory effects of sevoflurane and mild hypothermia during experimental endotoxemia in the rat. ⋯ Our data suggest that sevoflurane and mild hypothermia attenuate the inflammatory response during endotoxemia in vivo thus contributing to their beneficial role in clinical organ protection.
