Validation and clinical feasibility of nitrogen washin/washout functional residual capacity measurements in children.
The functional residual capacity (FRC) is an important parameter in pediatric respiratory monitoring but it is difficult to assess in the clinical setting. We have introduced a modified N(2) washout method utilizing a change of F(I)O(2) of 0.1 for FRC measurement in adult respiratory monitoring. This study validated the algorithm in a pediatric lung model and investigated the stability and feasibility in a pediatric peri-operative and intensive care setting. ⋯ FRC was satisfactorily measured by a modified N(2) algorithm and may be included as a monitoring variable in pediatric respiratory care. Pediatric FRC monitoring demands strictly stable conditions as measurements are performed close to the limits of the monitor's specifications.

Comparative StudyEffects of xenon on ischemic spinal cord injury in rabbits: a comparison with propofol.
Xenon has been shown to reduce cellular injury after cerebral ischemia. However, the neuroprotective effects of xenon on ischemic spinal cord are unknown. The authors compared the effects of xenon and propofol on spinal cord injury following spinal cord ischemia in rabbits. ⋯ The results indicated that 70% of xenon has no additional neuroprotective effects on ischemic spinal cord injury in rabbits compared with propofol.

Room for improvement: nurses' and physicians' views of a post-operative pain management program.
The practice of post-operative pain therapy continues to be a problem. We conducted a survey among nurses and physicians about their views of an established post-operative pain management program. ⋯ Despite staff's high personal priority and well-established APS and pain management program, post-operative pain therapy still leaves room for improvement. Considerable confusion about responsibilities and duties underlines the importance of better organizational approaches.

Sevoflurane-induced post-conditioning has no beneficial effects on neuroprotection after incomplete cerebral ischemia in rats.
The aim of this study was to investigate whether sevoflurane-induced post-conditioning has a neuroprotective effect against incomplete cerebral ischemia in rats. ⋯ These findings show that sevoflurane administration after ischemia does not provide neuroprotection in rats subjected to incomplete cerebral ischemia.

Effects of surfactant replacement on alveolar overdistension and plasma cytokines in ventilator-induced lung injury.
Overdistension of the lung causes ventilator-induced lung injury (VILI) accompanied by surfactant abnormalities and inflammatory changes. We investigated the effects of surfactant replacement on overdistension of the terminal airspaces and plasma cytokine levels in VILI. ⋯ In rats with VILI, surfactant replacement reversed overdistension of the terminal airspaces that may induce barotrauma, but not upregulation of MIP-2, IL-6, and IL-10 within 2 h.
