Randomized Controlled TrialEffects of anaesthesia-induced hypotension and phenylephrine on plasma volume expansion by hydroxyethyl starch: A randomised controlled study.
Changes in blood haemoglobin concentration indicate plasma volume expansion following hydroxyethyl starch (HES) infusion, but may be affected by vascular tone and HES-induced shedding of the endothelial surface layer (ESL). We hypothesised that anaesthesia-induced hypotension enhances changes in plasma volume as assessed by blood haemoglobin concentration (ΔPVHb , %) following HES infusion. ⋯ Increased volume expansion of circulating plasma following HES infusion in anaesthesia-induced hypotension compared to when blood pressure is restored by phenylephrine may result from an attenuation of transcapillary fluid filtration, rather than ESL shedding. Oxycodone for pain management in the latent phase of labour - a pragmatic trial.
Parenteral opioids are used for pain relief in labour but there are little data for oxycodone in this context. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy, foetal exposure and safety of subcutaneous oxycodone in the latent phase of labour. ⋯ Subcutaneous oxycodone provided effective analgesia during the latent phase of labour. Newborn exposure at birth was low, and oxycodone was well-tolerated.

An evaluation of the Danish version of the Pediatric Anesthesia Emergence Delirium scale.
Emergence Delirium (ED) is a common complication from anesthesia. Although ED has a short duration, detection is important due to the risk that ED poses for post-operative complications in the child. The Pediatric Anesthesia Emergence Delirium (PAED) scale has been translated into Danish, but it has not yet been validated. The aim of this study was to investigate the inter-rater reliability, criterion validity, and responsiveness of the Danish version of the PAED scale as well as to determine the prevalence of ED. ⋯ The Danish version of the PAED scale was found reliable and demonstrated high levels of sensitivity and specificity. In addition, it was possible to identify changes in scores over time. Prevalence was in line with existing literature.

Impact of deep breathing on predictability of stroke volume variation in spontaneous breathing patients.
This study investigated the ability of stroke volume variation (SVV) during deep breathing to discriminate fluid responders among spontaneously breathing patients. ⋯ Deep breathing could improve the reliability of dynamic indices in spontaneously breathing patients.

Observational StudyThe potential for organ donation in Iceland: a nationwide study of deaths in intensive care units.
The deceased organ donation rate in Iceland has been low compared with other Western countries. The aim of this study was to explore the potential for organ donation after brain death in Iceland. ⋯ The donation rate increased markedly in the last 2 years of the study period after remaining low for more than a decade. This change can largely be explained by a high incidence of PDs and a low family refusal rate. Missed donation opportunities suggest a potential to maintain a high donation rate in the future.
