Chronic postoperative opioid use after open cardiac surgery: A Danish population-based cohort study.
Knowledge of chronic opioid use after cardiac surgery is sparse. We therefore aimed to describe the proportion of new chronic post-operative opioid use after open cardiac surgery. ⋯ New chronic post-operative opioid use after open cardiac surgery is common. Focus on post-discharge opioid use may help clinicians to reduce rates of new chronic opioid users.

ReviewThrombocytopenia in intensive care unit patients: a scoping review.
Thrombocytopenia is frequent in intensive care unit (ICU) patients and may be associated with adverse outcomes. We aimed to assess the incidence, risk factors, and outcomes associated with thrombocytopenia in adult ICU patients. ⋯ Thrombocytopenia is common and associated with increased morbidity and mortality in adult ICU patients. Several risk factors for thrombocytopenia exists, but the evidence-base on management strategies, including transfusion thresholds and thromboprophylaxis in ICU patients is very limited.

Observational StudySerum-neuroproteins, near-infrared spectroscopy, and cognitive outcome after beach-chair shoulder surgery: observational cohort study analyses.
Cerebral hypoxia may occur during surgery but currently used cerebral oxygenation saturation (rSO2) monitors remain controversial with respect to improving clinical outcome. Novel neuroprotein biomarkers are potentially released into systemic circulation and combined with near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) could clarify the presence of per-operative cerebral hypoxia. We investigated changes to serum-neuroprotein concentrations post-surgically, paired with NIRS and cognitive outcome, in patients operated in the beach chair position (BCP). ⋯ Some biomarkers were significantly changed with surgery in the beach chair position. The change was at some points associated to post-operative cognitive decline, and to intraoperative low rSO2. (237).

Observational StudyCharacteristics, interventions and longer-term outcomes of COVID-19 ICU patients in Denmark - a nationwide, observational study.
Most data on intensive care unit (ICU) patients with COVID-19 originate in selected populations from stressed healthcare systems with shorter term follow-up. We present characteristics, interventions and longer term outcomes of the entire, unselected cohort of all ICU patients with COVID-19 in Denmark where the ICU capacity was not exceeded. ⋯ In this nationwide, population-based cohort of ICU patients with COVID-19, longer term survival was high despite high age and substantial use of organ support. Male gender, age, and chronic co-morbidities, in particular chronic pulmonary disease, were associated with increased risk of death.
