Randomized Controlled TrialEffect of pre-operative fluid therapy on hemodynamic stability during anesthesia induction, a randomized study.
Preserving perfusion pressure during anesthesia induction is crucial. Standardized anesthesia methods, alert fluid therapy and vasoactive drugs may help maintain adequate hemodynamic conditions throughout the induction procedure. In this randomized study, we hypothesized that a pre-operative volume bolus based on lean body weight would decrease the incidence of significant blood pressure drops (BPD) after induction with target-controlled infusion (TCI) or rapid sequence induction (RSI). ⋯ Pre-operative fluid bolus decreased the incidence of significant blood pressure drops during TCI and RSI induction of general anesthesia.

Randomized Controlled TrialDoes intraperitoneal ropivacaine reduce postoperative inflammation? A prospective, double-blind, placebo-controlled pilot study.
Postoperative inflammation is a common consequence of surgery and the ensuing stress response. Local anesthetics have anti-inflammatory properties. The primary aim of this study was to evaluate if LA administrated intraperitoneally perioperatively might inhibit expression of inflammatory cytokines. ⋯ In this small study, perioperative intraperitoneal ropivacaine did not reduce the systemic inflammatory response associated with major abdominal surgery. Total and free ropivacaine concentrations were below known toxic concentrations in humans.

Randomized Controlled TrialNeedle tip tracking for ultrasound-guided peripheral nerve block procedures-An observer blinded, randomised, controlled, crossover study on a phantom model.
The Onvision needle tip tracking (NTT) is a new technology consisting of a needle with an ultrasound sensor close to the needle tip and a console for computerised signal processing. The aim of the study was to evaluate NTT technology during ultrasound-guided simulated peripheral nerve block procedures in a porcine phantom model. ⋯ The new NTT technology significantly reduced the procedure time and the number of hand movements for ultrasound-guided out-of-plane PNB procedures. No significant differences were found for the in-plane procedures.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyRestrictive vs liberal oxygen for trauma patients-the TRAUMOX1 pilot randomised clinical trial.
Hyperoxaemia is commonly observed in trauma patients but has been associated with pulmonary complications and mortality in some patient populations. The objectives of this study were to evaluate whether maintenance of normoxia is feasible using a restrictive oxygen strategy in the initial phase after trauma and to evaluate the incidence of 30-day mortality and/or major pulmonary complications. ⋯ Maintenance of normoxia using a restrictive oxygen strategy following trauma is feasible. This pilot study serves as the basis for a larger clinical trial.

Randomized Controlled TrialSevoflurane EC50 for intravenous cannulation attempt and movement in children.
Intravenous cannulation at lighter planes of anaesthesia can lead to adverse respiratory and haemodynamic events. So far, there is no consensus on optimum end tidal sevoflurane concentration required for intravenous cannulation in children. We aimed to evaluate the optimum end tidal concentration at which an intravenous cannulation can be successfully attempted without movements in paediatric patients after inhalational induction of general anaesthesia. ⋯ Intravenous cannulation can be accomplished without movements at end tidal sevoflurane of 1.3% in children aged 1-3 years in 50% of children.
