ReviewNasal continuous positive airway pressure for respiratory distress in non-tertiary care centres: what is needed and where to from here?
Respiratory distress is one of the commonest reasons for admission to a special care nursery (SCN) affecting between 2.5 and 5.0% of all babies born per year. While most recover with supplemental oxygen, some require transfer to a neonatal intensive care leading to significant family disruption, and financial cost. ⋯ The risk benefit ratio of providing nCPAP in SCNs depends upon many factors including the ability to maintain the skills required and the distance/time to the nearest tertiary centre. Appropriate nurseries should be identified with the aim of supporting them in the provision of nCPAP in a safe manner.

Review Historical ArticleImprovement in mortality of very low birthweight infants and the changing pattern of neonatal mortality: the 50-year experience of one perinatal centre.
Neonatology is a relatively new sub-specialty so we aimed to review survival data in the context of advances in neonatal care. ⋯ In addition to reporting the remarkable improvement in neonatal survival over this period, we have highlighted items of historical context.

ReviewMedical management of paediatric burn injuries: best practice.
Burns commonly occur in children and their first aid remains inadequate despite burn prevention programmes. While scald injuries predominate, contact and flame burns remain common. ⋯ The heterogeneous nature of burn wounds, coupled with the difficulties associated with the early clinical assessment of burn depth, has stimulated the application of novel technologies to predict burn wound outcome. This review explores current best practice in the management of paediatric burns, with a focus on prevention, optimal first aid, resuscitation, burn wound prediction and wound management strategies.

ReviewUse of laryngeal mask airway in near-term and term neonates during resuscitation: is it effective and safe?
A scenario where laryngeal mask airway was used for successful resuscitation of a late preterm neonate after failed bag and mask ventilation and unsuccessful endotracheal intubation is presented. A summary of available evidence regarding the safety and efficacy of the use of laryngeal mask airway during neonatal resuscitation is also presented.

ReviewChild nutrition and lower respiratory tract disease burden in New Zealand: a global context for a national perspective.
To consider the contribution of malnutrition to acute lower respiratory infection (ALRI) disease burden in children <5 years old in New Zealand (NZ). ⋯ The contribution of malnutrition to ALRI disease burden in NZ requires greater clarification. Such clarification is necessary to inform the development of nutritional policy, which seeks to improve early child health.
