On-table decision-making in intracapsular hip fracture surgery: mid-term results of a pilot study.
At the present time, it is generally recommended to use hip replacement in dislocated fractures to avoid failure after internal fixation. A problem is that previous research has demonstrated that observers have problems in discriminating between dislocated and undislocated fractures. A possible solution to this problem would be to use arthroplasty in the majority of the cases. However, this also means that many fractures with the potential for uneventful healing would be replaced. ⋯ The mid-term outcome after internal fixation is promising. The careful selection process may be helpful in identifying fracture patterns for which internal fixation may be considered as a safe and less invasive alternative to hip arthroplasty.

Clinical TrialVisual intraoperative estimation of range of motion is misleading in minimally invasive total hip arthroplasty.
Generally range of motion (ROM) in total hip arthroplasty (THA) is intraoperatively assessed by eye. Can we assume that visual estimation of ROM is reliable? ⋯ Even the experienced surgeon's intraoperative estimation of ROM by eye is not reliable and differs up to 30° compared to objective measurements in minimally invasive THA. For accurate intraoperative assessment of ROM, the use of technical devices is recommended.

Comparative StudyOpen wedge high tibial osteotomy (HTO) versus mobile bearing unicondylar medial joint replacement: five years results.
Aim of this study was to compare clinical results after open wedge HTO (OW-HTO and medial unicondylar joint replacement (UKA) in patients aged between 55 and 65. ⋯ The results of this study showed that 5 years after surgery patients after UKA had less residual pain and symptoms than patients after UKA. These advantages might result in a higher quality of life.

Two-stage protocol and spacer implantation in the treatment of destructive septic arthritis of the hip joint.
The ideal treatment of the destructive septic arthritis of the hip joint remains controversial. The aim of the present retrospective study was to report on our experience about the use of antibiotic-loaded cement spacers in the treatment of destructive bacterial coxitis. ⋯ Two-stage treatment and spacer implantation is associated with a high rate of infection control but also with a high mortality rate between stages.

Retrospective quantitative cartilage and semi-quantitative morphological evaluation at 6 years after ACL reconstruction.
Purpose We analyzed anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) patients in order to evaluate degenerative changes and the effect of meniscal insufficiency at mid-term follow-up. ⋯ ACLR knees exhibit cartilage matrix and morphological degeneration at mid-term follow-up. Lateral meniscal insufficiency noted at ACLR presents a higher risk of developing degenerative changes than does the medial meniscus insufficiency; however, this difference may not be detected clinically.
