Review Meta AnalysisComparison of proprioception between osteoarthritic and age-matched unaffected knees: a systematic review and meta-analysis.
Theoretically, proprioceptive acuity could decrease in patients with knee osteoarthritis. However, there have been conflicting results in terms of proprioceptive deficit in osteoarthritic knees. The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to compare knee proprioception between osteoarthritic and healthy control knees. ⋯ Meta-analysis, Level II.

Review Meta AnalysisOpen versus minimally-invasive surgery for Achilles tendon rupture: a meta-analysis study.
Despite the presence of various different surgical procedures, the preferable technique for repair of acute Achilles tendon ruptures is unknown and, therefore, object of discussions. The purpose of this meta-analysis was to compare clinical outcomes and complication-rates between the minimally invasive and the standard open repair of acute Achilles tendon ruptures. ⋯ Compared to the minimally-invasive Achilles tendon reconstruction, the open procedure evidenced a lower rate of sural nerve palsy and postoperative palpable knot, whereas in the minimally-invasive reconstruction group quicker surgery duration, a lower rate of post-operative wound necrosis, superficial and deep infections and less scar tissue adhesions could be observed. No relevant discrepancies were detected among the two techniques in terms of post-operative re-rupture.

Vancomycin powder (VP) is a well-established topical antibiotic used in spinal surgery to prevent surgical site infections. More recently its extension to hip and knee arthroplasty was introduced. The aim of this study was to examine toxic effects of VP on the viability of human chondrocytes. Our hypothesis was that VP damages human chondrocytes in vitro with increasing concentration and length of exposure. ⋯ These results show that exposure to high VP concentrations yields to a damage of human chondrocytes in vitro. Chondrotoxicity is an immediate effect that is proportional to VP concentration. Therefore, the intraarticular use of high concentrations of vancomycin powder in the presence of native cartilage tissue must be considered critically.

Multicenter StudyIs there a role of tranexamic acid in rheumatoid arthritis with total knee arthroplasty? Findings from a multicenter prospective cohort study in China.
Tranexamic acid (TXA) has proven to be effective in reducing the blood loss associated with total knee arthroplasty (TKA) in patients with osteoarthritis. However, there still exists a paucity of evidence regarding the effectiveness of intravenous TXA in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. The aim of this study was to explore the efficacy and safety of intravenous TXA on blood loss after TKA in Chinese patients with rheumatoid arthritis. ⋯ TXA can effectively diminish blood loss, reduce transfusion, shorten LOS and decrease hospitalization costs after TKA in Chinese patients with rheumatoid arthritis, without increasing the risk of complications.

Survival in patients with carcinomas presenting with bone metastasis at diagnosis: a SEER population-based cohort study.
Carcinoma metastasis to bone is a common reason for consultation to orthopedic surgeons. The presence of bone metastases (BM) is usually associated with poor prognosis which is worsened in the presence of synchronous metastases. The purpose of this study was to: (1) identify the most common carcinomas presenting with BM at diagnosis, to (2) analyze their survival, and (3) compare this against the survival of patients with additional synchronous metastasis based on a large population analysis. ⋯ Level III, prognostic study.
