Varus stem positioning does not affect long-term functional outcome in cementless anatomical total hip arthroplasty.
Varus positioning is the most common femoral malposition in total hip arthroplasty (THA). We compared the long-term outcomes of an anatomical cementless femoral stem positioned in varus versus neutral alignment. ⋯ A varus alignment of a cementless anatomic femoral stem does not affect survivorship, clinical outcomes or complication rate on an average follow-up of 10 years, despite increasing stress-shielding rates.

The 'critical trochanter angle' does not show superiority over the CCD angle in predicting varus stem alignment in cementless short-stem total hip arthroplasty.
Varus positioning of the femoral stem can affect the hip offset (HO). The critical trochanter angle (CTA) was introduced in 2019 as a novel geometric angle, to predict varus stem alignment in cementless straight stem THA. The aim of this study was to evaluate the applicability of the CTA as a predictor for stem alignment in THA with a cementless neck resecting short stem. ⋯ IV.

Comparison of complication profiles for femoral neck, intertrochanteric, and subtrochanteric geriatric hip fractures.
Most geriatric hip fractures occur in the femoral neck (FN) and intertrochanteric (IT) regions of the femur, while a minority occur in the subtrochanteric (ST) region. Relative outcomes based on the anatomical subtype of fracture are not well studied. This study characterizes postoperative complications and outcomes of hip fractures distinguished by anatomic region. ⋯ With respect to anatomic region, geriatric hip fractures have similar short-term mortality and medical AE profiles with differences in transfusion, reoperation, and readmission rates. Knowledge of these short-term outcomes may guide surgeons in counseling hip fracture patients peri-operatively.

Biomechanical stability of short versus long proximal femoral nails in osteoporotic subtrochanteric A3 reverse-oblique femoral fractures: a cadaveric study.
Due to the demographic change towards an older society, osteoporosis-related proximal femur fractures are steadily increasing. Intramedullary nail osteosyntheses are available in different lengths, where the field of application overlaps. The aim of this study was to investigate whether subtrochanteric fractures can also be treated stably using a short femoral intramedullary nail in cadaveric bones. ⋯ III.
