Complications following total hip arthroplasty and hemiarthroplasty for femoral neck fractures in patients with a history of lumbar spinal fusion.
The purpose of this study was to examine whether previous lumbar spinal fusion (LSF) was an independent risk factor for complications in patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty (THA) or hemiarthroplasty for displaced femoral neck fractures. ⋯ Presence of LSF was found to be an independent risk factor for increased joint complications in patients undergoing either a THA or hemiarthroplasty for displaced femoral neck fractures.

Clinical TrialTwo-stage shoulder arthroplasty after deep infection of the shoulder caused by arthroplasty, osteosynthesis or other surgical procedures: microbial spectrum, complications and functional outcome after at least 1 year follow-up.
Infection represents probably the most challenging complication in shoulder arthroplasty and all other surgical procedures of the shoulder. A deep infection of the shoulder is often combined with a destruction of the joint and a loss of function. In many cases the arthroplasty is the last resort for these patients to obtain a satisfactory function. The objective of this study was to determine outcome data on microbiota and clinical results of a two-stage shoulder arthroplasty procedure after deep infection of the shoulder. ⋯ Trial registration number: DRKS00016927, date of registration: 2019/03/19.

History of COVID-19 infection is not associated with increased D-dimer levels and risk of deep-vein thrombosis in total joint arthroplasty.
In the acute phase of COVID-19, elevated D-dimer levels indicate a hypercoagulable state putting the patients at increased risk for venous thromboembolic disease (VTE). It is unclear, if prior COVID-19 disease increases the risk for VTE after total joint arthroplasty (TJA) and if D-dimer levels can be used to identify patients at risk. ⋯ The findings of this investigation suggest there is no difference in D-dimer levels between SARS-CoV-2 IgG-positive and -negative patients undergoing TJA. Although there is a trend for increased VTE rates with increased D-dimer levels, routine D-dimer testing is not recommended based on the current data. SARS-CoV-2 IgG-positive patients have a low risk of VTE in the current study.

Migration pattern of cemented Exeter short stem in Dorr type A femurs. A prospective radiostereometry study with 2-year follow-up.
The Exeter short stem (ESS) is 25 mm shorter than the standard length v40 Exeter stem (Stryker) and intended for a narrow femoral diaphysis. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the migration pattern of the cemented ESS. ⋯ The 2-year migration pattern of the cemented ESS was similar to reports for the cemented standard length Exeter stem. Low preoperative T-score and varus stem-position showed a tendency for higher stem migration and should be studied as risk factors for failure in larger studies of cemented polished stems.
