Incidence of complications and revision surgery in HAART compliant HIV patients undergoing primary total hip and knee arthroplasty: an institutional review.
Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) positive patients are at high risk for osteonecrosis along with age-related osteoarthritis, resulting in a high number of joint reconstruction surgeries at younger ages in these immunosuppressed patients. Few previous studies have reported on patient outcomes in HAART (highly active antiretroviral therapy) compliant patients undergoing primary arthroplasty. The aim of this study is to report one institution's overall rate of complications and revision in HAART-compliant patients after primary hip and knee arthroplasty. ⋯ Arthroplasty is a viable option for HAART-compliant patients. Most previous studies showing a higher risk for deep tissue infection and revision in HIV patients have not accounted for modern HAART. Our results show that compliance with HAART has vastly improved the outcomes of arthroplasty in these patients, while a history of IVDU is likely the largest risk factor for infection in this population.

The simulation of terrible triad injuries in fresh-frozen human cadaveric specimens with intact soft tissue envelope.
The aim of the present study was to develop a technical process to reproducibly generate terrible triad injuries (TTI) in fresh-frozen human cadaveric specimens, while leaving the skin intact. Such "pre-fractured" specimens, used for scientific analysis and for surgical education, might help to improve current treatment, which is complex and prone to complications. ⋯ The present study provides an instrument for successful and reproducible production of dislocation fracture patterns with their typical accompanying soft tissue lesions. The methodology might be applied on a broad basis to be able to perform biomechanical studies regarding primary stability of fixation concepts for TTI and to educate surgeons in a fairly realistic scenario with the surgical treatment of TTI.

Focusing on the amount of immediate changes in spinopelvic radiographic parameters to predict the amount of mid-term improvement of quality of life in adult degenerative scoliosis patients with surgery.
Surgery is still an effective treatment option for adult degenerative scoliosis (ADS), but how to predict patients' significant amount of the improvement in quality of life remains unclear. The previous studies included an inhomogeneous population. This study aimed to report the results about concentrating on the amount of immediate changes in spinopelvic radiographic parameters to predict the amount of mid-term improvement in quality of life in ADS patients. ⋯ This study shows that ΔSVA can predict the amount of mid-term improvement in quality of life in ADS patients. The changes in the other radiographic parameters were not significant. Two equations were yielded to estimate ΔODI and ΔVAS. ΔSVA has respective cut-off value to predict ΔODI and ΔVAS.

Radiologic findings associated with mucoid degeneration of the anterior cruciate ligament.
Mucoid degeneration (MD) of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is a well-recognized pathology characterized by the degradation of collagen fibers and infiltration of a mucoid-like substance. This study is to determine the anatomical associated factors for MD-ACL using radiographic and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). ⋯ Level IIIb.

Ossification of the posterior capitellum: description of a new pathology and its radiological appearance.
Boxer elbow and handball goalkeeper elbow are causes of impingement characterized by osteophytes formation at the olecranon and coronoid tip as well as their corresponding fossae. Herein, we present another distinct pathology in these patients: the formation of an exostosis at the posterolateral aspect of the elbow. ⋯ In patients without history of elbow trauma, bony irregularities of the posterior aspect of the capitellum may indicate ossification of the posterolateral aspect of the elbow, most likely caused by repetitive hyperextensions.
