A new accelerometer-based portable navigation system provides high accuracy of acetabular cup placement in total hip arthroplasty in both the lateral decubitus and supine positions.
No studies have compared the accuracy of acetabular cup placement in total hip arthroplasty (THA) in the supine and lateral decubitus positions using the same portable navigation system. Thus, this study aimed to compare the accuracy of acetabular cup placement using a new accelerometer-based portable navigation system combined with an infrared stereo camera and inertial measurement unit between the supine and lateral decubitus positions. ⋯ This new accelerometer-based portable navigation system may provide high accuracy of the cup placement in THA in the lateral decubitus and supine positions.

A human, allogeneic cortical bone screw for distal interphalangeal joint (DIP) arthrodesis: a retrospective cohort study with at least 10 months follow-up.
The prime requisites of a good digital arthrodesis are a painless and stable union in a proper position. Arthrodesis of the distal interphalangeal joint of the fingers is not without potential complications including nonunion, malunion, and deep tissue infections. The Shark Screw® is a human, cortical bone allograft for osteosynthesis and an alternative to metal or bioabsorbable devices in orthopedics and trauma surgery. The primary hypothesis is that the fusion and complication rate, using the Shark Screw®, is at least similar to those reported in the literature, using metal or bioabsorbable screws. ⋯ IV.

ReviewClassifications of posterior malleolar fractures: a systematic literature review.
Complex ankle fractures frequently involve the posterior malleolus. Many classifications describing posterior malleolar fractures (PMF) exist. The aim of this study was to provide a systematic literature review to outline existing PMF classifications and estimate their accuracy. ⋯ None of the reviewed PMF classifications has been able to establish itself decisively in the literature. Most of the classifications are insufficient in terms of a derivable treatment algorithm or a prognosis with regard to outcome. However, as the Bartoníček/Rammelt classification has the greatest potential due to its treatment algorithm, its reliability in combination with consistent predictive values, its usage in clinical practice and research appears advisable.

Posterolateral approach for posterior malleolus fixation in ankle fractures: functional and radiological outcome based on Bartonicek classification.
Posterolateral approach has been advocated for the treatment of ankle fractures involving the posterior malleolus and satisfactory results were demonstrated in several studies. The Bartonicek classification based on 3-dimensional CT scanning was commonly used for treatment recommendation of posterior malleolar fracture (PMF). The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the clinical effect of the posterolateral approach for the treatment of PMF and present outcomes of patients with different types of Bartonicek classification. ⋯ The posterolateral approach could achieve good clinical outcomes in the treatment of posterior malleolus fracture. Patients with a Bartonicek type II fracture had a better functional outcome measured by the AOFAS score compared to other types. Bartonicek type IIa fractures got a higher AOFAS score and a lower incidence of osteoarthritis at the final follow-up than the other two subtypes. Classification of PMFs according to the Bartonicek classification was reliable.

Long-term survival analysis of cementless large-diameter head metal-on-metal total hip arthroplasty.
The aim of this retrospective study was to study the long-term survival and reasons for revisions of a single-type, large-diameter head (LDH) metal-on-metal (MoM) implant. A special study interest was to find the threshold level for revision in terms of adverse reaction to metal debris (ARMD). ⋯ The survival of the implant was on a moderate level as the 10-year cumulative survival rate was 89.6%. The exact threshold level for ARMD revision cannot be determined due to multiple variables affecting factors in re-operation decision-making.
