Comparison of five different fluoroscopic methods for identifying the MPFL femoral footprint.
The success of medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL) reconstruction is closely linked to the precise positioning of the femoral tunnel. Intraoperative fluoroscopy is commonly utilized to identify the MPFL footprint. This study aimed to ascertain the most accurate fluoroscopic method among the five previously described methods used to determine the MPFL femoral footprint. ⋯ Level IV, cadaveric study.

The prevalence of bilateral and ipsilateral radiographic osteoarthritis is high in White, Asian and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islanders presenting for unilateral knee or hip arthroplasty.
It is estimated that one-third of patients presenting with unilateral joint pain have contralateral osteoarthritis (OA) at first presentation. Most studies have primarily examined White patient cohorts. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of contralateral joint OA for patients presenting for unilateral total knee (TKA), unicompartmental knee (UKA) or total hip arthroplasty (THA) among Asian, Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander and White patients. ⋯ The prevalence of contralateral joint OA and concurrent hip OA is high in all three racial groups. Due to the extensive prevalence of contralateral and concurrent knee and hip OA, bilateral radiographic evaluation should be considered for all patients presenting with unilateral hip or knee pain due to OA.

In vivo study to assess fat embolism resulting from the Reamer-Irrigator-Aspirator 2 system compared to a novel aspirator-based concept for intramedullary bone graft harvesting.
Fat embolism (FE) following intramedullary (IM) reaming can cause severe pulmonary complications and sudden death. Recently, a new harvesting concept was introduced in which a novel aspirator is used first for bone marrow (BM) aspiration and then for subsequent aspiration of morselized endosteal bone during sequential reaming (A + R + A). In contrast to the established Reamer-Irrigator-Aspirator (RIA) 2 system, the new A + R + A concept allows for the evacuation of fatty BM prior to reaming. In this study, we hypothesized that the risk of FE, associated coagulopathic reactions and pulmonary FE would be comparable between the RIA 2 system and the A + R + A concept. ⋯ The use of the RIA 2 system and the novel A + R + A harvesting concept which consists of BM evacuation followed by sequential IM reaming and aspiration of endosteal bone, resulted in only minor fat intravasation, coagulopathic reactions and pulmonary FE, with no significant differences between the groups. Our results, therefore, suggest that both the RIA 2 system and the new A + R + A concept are comparable technologies in terms of FE-related complications.

Leg length discrepancy is not a risk factor for plantar fasciitis.
Plantar fasciitis (PF) is a main source of heel pain, and only about one-third of patients have bilateral symptomatic involvement, although age, body mass index (BMI), and physical activities are known risk factors. The high prevalence of unilateral involvement is poorly understood. We aimed to assess the potential association between PF and the leg length discrepancy (LLD) in unilateral PF. ⋯ Level III, case-control.

Patella height measurements in patients with patellofemoral instability: the power to predict patella height indices.
Numerous indices for patella height measurement are described in the literature; however, there is not a universally accepted 'gold standard'. Choice of indices varies depending on personal preference and previous experience, making it difficult to compare results between studies. The aims of this study were to assess the correlation between different patella height indices and generate statistically derived formulae that can be used to predict the value of one patella height ratio when another is known. ⋯ The formulae produced in this study can predict the value of one patella height ratio when the results of another are known. This could facilitate systematic reviews and meta-analyses by allowing the pooling together of data from many studies.
